posible blown front pump. If toque convertor is turning you can verify pump output by disconnecting one of the tranny cooler lines at the radiator. start the car PUT IT IN GEAR and see if fluid is pumping. HTH

I have been told by someone smarter than I with these transmissions ( I forget who) that you need to insert the TC into the front pump and turn it some ungodly number of times (7? 13?) to be sure it engages. Maybe it was just not engaged? But, as has been said, pull the lines and see if you get any fluid pumping in gear.

Did you lower the valve body at all when you had the pan off? Funny thing happened when I changed my K1/2 Springs... I had the valve body out, changed springs, replaced it only to miss a point where the shifter linkage attaches internally. It was essentially stuck in first gear. Having the car parked against the garage door averted trouble when I started it. It was perplexing as all get out until I thought about the problem and pulled the pan to see my error.

Maybe there is an air-lock in the front-pump...
Worth doing the cooler-pipe off ploy, It may help clear any air-locks. Ive heard that the M.B. trans takes a good few mins to re-fill the converter if it was drained along with the pan...

Like I said before, this transmission functioned perfectly fine while I was driving the car before it threw a rod. Would this damage the pump or anything in the hydraulic circuit? If not the only thing I could think is that I did not put the torque converter in properly. I really would like to be able to drive this car someday. It's been sitting since September when I purchased it (with a rod knock initially). Now it has a freshly rebuilt engine, but obviously that does absolutely no good if the power can't get from there to the wheels . Thanks Nick |

Ok-so I pulled the transmission today and found the problem. The fingers that stick up from the pump are definitely broken, torque converter end is fine though. My next question---the pump appears to be held on by just the bolts on the front. Am I correct in assuming that if these are removed the pump will simply come out and can be replaced?

Never mind--I already removed it. What MB models use this transmission or a variant that will have the same pump?
BTW- Thanks for all of the help so far! |

Photos of the damaged pump
Here's some pictures of the pump-----
The remains of one of the tabs and a chip on the aluminum housing The now smooth gear And what the pump should look like So off to the junkyard I go. With any luck I'll be able to start breaking in the new engine this weekend. |

Yeah- ouch. I guess MB figured out that the fingers on the old 4-bolt (722.1xx) TC were too weak, so they beefed them up at the cost of the mating fingers on the new 722.3xx front pump. I have seen a small number of 722.3xx pumps like that... I have one that was still running ( I think) with just one of the tangs present. Where did the other one go? Those things really look like they should take some torque, but I guess they don't...
Any 722.3xx pump will do. Any W123 or W126 turbodiesel, and many of the gassers until the early 90's had them, so finding one shouldn't be too hard. Especially with the C4C's, they had to move under power to be sold, so they would be a good bet...

There is a C4C's 420SEL in one of the local yards now--going to investigate it to see if removing the tranny is pretty straight forward (it's pretty easy on the 300sd with the engine still in, but the V8 may complicate clearances) I'm just very thankful this is not a 107 bodied car. Everything is very difficult to get at in those. I had to change one of the heater hoses to the core-----requires removal of the passengers cowel and the ability to see through metal and tiny tiny hands. Took over 45 minutes to do! Thanks for the reply Nick
