Dyslexic Transmission: refuses to drop into gear.

This morning I went out to get in my car to head to work and something rather intriguing occured, I started the car normally and let it idle for a couple minutes before putting her into drive. I noticed that the engine RPM's didn't drop and it didn't feel like it went into gear. I tried again, and nothing. Finally, I revved the engine 500 or so RPM's and still nothing. The car is acting like it is still in park. The most funny thing is that I drove yesterday with no issue at all. I will have her in on the rack this weekend to see if the linkage has slipped on the shifter rod on the side of the transmission. I am hoping that someone here has some insight into if this problem is in fact common and what it could be...

I await your responses with baited breath.

Ian

I assume this is the '81 SD in your sig. Does this one have the early transmission with the adjustable low/reverse band, or is it the later transmission without the external adjustment?

Fluid level check out okay. Right in between the low and high marks... Yes this is the 81, I do not know if it has the external or internal adjustment... Any ideas?

I'd pull a cooler line and see if it's pumping fluid.

Kerry, that's what I thought, it probably is the front pump that is bad. I'll pull it tonight and report back.

I'd check the shifter pushings.

No reverse, I am lead to believe it is a failed front pump. I have a w123 trans to go in the car, however, I need the special socket to take off the rear driveline coupler...
