The rear doors on the 87 190d are only opening easily up to the halfway point. If you shove hard, they open the rest of the way, but with a sickening groan. Im assuming I maybe just need some grease and it would be pretty easy to remedy, but ive never done it before. Any suggestions on brands/application methods? Also, the sunroof opens SLLOWWWLY, maybe it needs some grease as well?

Sounds like you need new door checks. The sunroof can probably benefit from the rails being cleaned and re-greased.

Look in your door jamb and you'll see a metal, flat "bar" that goes from the door frame to inside the door. That's a door check. Behind the door panel is a box that is the primary part of that door check - they get worn or broken after 20+ years.

You'll need to remove the door panel, then unbolt the bad one and bolt in a new one. It's a simple job - worst part is getting the door panel off.

Better replace the door check BEFORE you can't close the door anymore. It has happen to other forum members....open door, then can't close it because door check is broken.

What about the doors not staying OPEN? Is that still the "door check"?

Mine open and close just fine but always swing closed by themselves. I tell my friends it was a special "option" for self-closing doors whenever they close on their legs getting in and out of the car.

Yes, that is still a door check issue. They have detents in them and a new door check will fix it.
