Dude, you're gonna need a new engine
In two or three hundred thousand more miles.

I don't think that's the end of the world.
My indy showed me a different way to judge blowby, [U]I am not sure how valid it is but/U] I do think it's less subjective than looking at how the cap jumps. Pull the valve cover vent tube and plug the opening. He claims if the motor stops in under 5 seconds you have trouble, 5-10 sec mid life, 10 seconds or more is a tight motor.

The best objective test on here is the 'fill the garbage bag' test. If you search on it you'll get the size of the bag and the length of time other engines have taken to fill the bag.

Doesn't seem overly concerning to me.
Does seem like you could stand to adjust your throttle linkage.....

with no blowby like that, it should start faster
adj valves and with the first compression stroke she should go only a gasser chugs to start, i love how easy the 617 can start in good weather, tap the key over and she gooood but ya, ur good to go untill the oil fill cap jumps off, yours is doing the shimmie it just starting to get broken in

Went to get some parts today (air filters etc...) the mechanic looked at the car and told me that it had excessive blowby. This is my first diesel and first MB I have no idea how it should look. Don't know anyone with a diesel MB that I can compare to. Wanted a second opinion from people who actually know the car. Car runs great, no complains here. Glad this look normal. Thanks. |

Don't go back to that mechanic. Your car is fine.

Excessive ?
If you would have done that to mine it would have blown the cap out of your hand covered you and the engine in oil and fogged the engine compartment with smoke ! Enjoy the many many years/miles it has ahead.

So many folks ask this question. I have another:
What are you gonna do differently with the car whether we say it has excessive blowby or doesn't? We all drive our cars for as long as they will start in reasonably cold weather or either uses simply too much oil to keep up with. So, don't worry about it and focus attention elsewhere. There are plenty more things to worry about, and they will pop up. they always do.....

When the smoke is coming out like a steam train going up a hill, then you have a blowby problem.
What you have is a good motor. Dont go back to that mech !!
