Question Turbo Upgrade

Hello All;

I am planning to upgrade my turbo and add an intercooler plus other things to keep the car (1987 300D) safe with higher performance. Does anyone know what brand/size would be as close to plug-and-play (bolt on with no modification) for my car? Thanks in advance.

Ben

PS: the car is 124.133, engine 603.960 and transmission 722.317.

check the performance section, but you have to add more fuel somehow- a different turbo and or IC will not add power without more fuel delivered.

William's info is correct. I just wanted to commend you on supplying all the information folks will need to answer your question. Nice job!

No he didn't. We can throw out turbos suggestions all day long, but none of them will make sense unless we know how much power he is aiming for, he wants boost to start and how the power is going to be used.

Question

Now I am getting 147hp (theoretically), my aim is somewhere between 250 and 300hp. Can I go the VNT way or not? If not what's the best traditional turbo that could supply such boost considering that I am sending my IP to Finland.

The common theme seems to be that the engine can't really support that kind of power for very long. You will need major internal upgrades, but then you're limited by the fact that it's an IDI engine to begin with. I'm sure that with enough money someone could pull the chambers, modify the head and a set of direct injection injectors to work together, put in bowled pistons, and then build from there, but it wouldn't be long before you hit the limits of the block itself. From looking around, it seem that the cylinder walls can't take quite as much as the rotating assembly, but that's in the 350-400hp range.
I've been following a few stories of mechanically actuated Dodge/Cummins VGTs, it seems to be very simple to pull the electronic controller and replace it with a standard wastegate actuator.
If you have the room, a two stage dual turbo system is a good option. Something small like a T025 off an Isuzu 2.2 for low speed boost followed by a high ratio T4 for upper RPM boost. Intercooling is pretty much required, aftercooling at the bare minimum. This sort of setup could push upwards of 35-40psi, well beyond what the engine can use.
