What's a 1986 190D worth?

I sold a 1986 190D 2.5 NA to my brother in law 6 years ago for $2800. It had 180K miles on it. It now has 300K, needs a water pump, starter and GP's. I've offered to buy it back for $500, which he has accepted. It is still pretty clean over all. Clear is peeling on the hood. AC doesn't work. Interior pretty clean. No tears. Current tags. What do you think?

I think both of you had/have a good deal.

Your brother in law used it for 6 years, 120K miles for a meagre depreciation of $2300. It is still a good deal even if you factor in above average maintainence costs.

At $500 its a good deal IF you know what you want to do with it. The world is full of $500 cars (including Mercedes, just look at my shop's driveway) so, you have to ask yourself, "why do I want to buy this car back even at such a good price?" And, if and when you can't come up with an answer your wife or significant other would accept, buy it anyway.

I would be buying it as an investment. I would plan to get it running well and try to get $1500 for it. Would a zero rust 190d with 300K in good running condition with non working AC be worth $1500?

i'd say it would be worth that. given that you must replace the starter and water pump. non-working AC makes the car kinda hard to sell...well maybe not in your location.

any clean and decent running car with AC is worth $1000 minimum...any car, any model, any year, any miles....

How much would it cost you to have the items fixed that wore out or failed since you last sold it to return it to it's previous condition? deduct that from what you first sold it for and you are probably close to a fair current price.

Unless the car was meticulously maintained, a 300K 190D will cost you to refurb. 300K is an iffy amount of mileage on a head gasket regardless of the maintenance cycle. Once you pull the head... well... err, ...you get the picture.

If I were selling the car for $1500 to someone, I would tell them that a head gasket is in the car's future. Kinda diminishes the value from there.

OK, thanks. I took the plunge and it is in my garage with its new starter installed. Looks like the radiator is leaking, not the H2O pump.

I just bought a 84 190D with 175k miles on it for $560.
Yes, I gotta fix a few things still, and yeah I have put a couple hundred on top of that, but here is my take...
I think you did good... you know a good chunk of the cars history regardless of mileage.
Mine just keeps making me smile... Its bought and paid for, the tags and insurance are dirt cheap, and the kicker is that it does 33 to 38mpg.
Take a long hard look at what it costs to find and buy a car that with average that MPG, run some numbers, and realize that this is CHEAP MOTORING!
Look at Ebay and see what these 190D's sell for.....
