Black Box on Valve Cover?

On my 240D Standard 4-speed, it's got that black box on top of the valve cover. I don't know what it does, controls EGR? I read that it can affect trans shifting on autos, so I don't have to worry about that, I just want it out. It's also connected to some linkage that goes to the air cleaner/intake manifold. What is all this madness? Can I just take of the linkages, plug the vacuum lines and tear it off?

I removed mine to give the valve cover a cleaner look. (I also polished the valve cover). I have no idea what it did. My butterfly valve on the intake was also hard-wired in the wide open position. I don't know if it was originally hooked up to it or not.

Yes, the little plastic valves control the EGR.
They only have an effect on an Automatic Transmission if they become a source of a Vacuum Leak; otherwise they do and control nothing that effects and Auto Trans.

I took it off, looks much nicer now. I plugged up the vacuum hoses with bbs and just popped the linkage off. It didn't look like it was controlling anything.

Thats on a 300d, the valve on the 240D controls shift timing.

They control shift timing on a manual trans 240D? Like with mind control waves, or what?
