May be the anti-theft system. Heard of it happening if the key is not recognized when the door is unlocked.

Hi, sounds like the K40 relay is failing. This is a common problem with these cars. If you click the search function above and use the term "K40", you'll find plenty to read up on the subject.

The relay is located under the plastic cover on the right side of the engine compartment. In this picture, it's the entire assembly visible at the bottom of the enclosure:

If you're handy with a soldering iron, it's possible to clean up and repair the failing joints and traces on the circuit board.

I'm having a similar problem. My 97 e300d cranks strong but will not start. Wife just drove it a few hours earlier with no issues. I did set off the alarm on purpose to test the horn which I am troubleshooting (different issue). Horn works with the alarm, just not from the steering wheel.

How does one "reset" the security system?

Thanks,
.....Dan

The alarm is connected to an anti-start feature. The flashing lights mean that feature has been activated. The owner's manual tells the procedure for re-synchronizing the remote with the receiver electronics in the rear view mirror.

Failure to start can be caused by the K40 relay not providing power to open the electric fuel shutoff at the IP but would not cause the red/green lights to flash.

Talking

Have to disagree (respectfully) with that last point. I just replaced the K40 in a '96 E300 last week. In addition to not starting, it would randomly set off the check engine light, and give warnings like "ETS/ABS", "battery discharged" (when it wasn't) and then -most colorfully- flash the red/green lights on the rear view mirror.

Replacing the K-40 (about $120.00 from the dealer and 5 minutes to plug it in) resolved all of these problems.

In the photo posted by Kar Tek the K-40 is the box with all of the fuses in it. Not as complicated as it looks - just unplug the wiring connectors, push a little spring clip out of the way and lift it out. New one even includes all the fuses.

I sit corrected. Thanks for that info; I'll keep it in mind if my wife's '96 E300D ever acts up in that manner. I guess the low voltage condition caused by a bad K40 can set off more than I thought. At least K40 isn't terribly expensive.
