I ordered my replacement alternator from fleebay. It was a high amp version otherwise I would have used fastlane. If you don't need high amps (any electric heaters with your WVO system) then I would just do a quality Bosch rebuild. Mine from ebay came with a pully attached. Just ask before you order. I had to replace the first one I got (under warranty from seller, but still a hassle).

On purchases with pulley included...
just be sure that the angle off the contact surface is the same as the belts used on your car....

that makes me a little wary of ordering anything online or from another forum member (because I can't verify the angles match). Is there much variation on the angle between models, years, etc.? "what are the odds" of it being the wrong angle If I buy one online or from a forum member?? thanks

If you get it from another MB the chances you will be fine..
I am just saying that some person selling them on Ebay or such may not know what make car it came off of and it might not be correct in the V angle...

I too ordered from ebay. It was listed as a new alternator made by and outfit called NSA, and it came with the pulley already installed. Fit like a glove, but when I started it up, the belt was flopping around, and making all kinds of noise at idle. Did a little comparison between the pulley on the old alternator and the new one, and I found out that the old alternator had a pulley called a "free wheel" pulley. I emailed the manufacture, and asked if the pulleys were interchangeable, and he stated yes. Ordered a special tool to remove the old pulley, and used an impact wrench to remove pulley on the new alternator. When it was all said and done, the new alternator works like a charm, but I had to do the job twice.

Post Alternator/Generator Pulleys

They're pretty much all interchangable , I use GM drive pulleys because they 're machined steel Vs. BOSCH's crap multi-piece stamped steel design , I had one of those loose a pie shaped chunk in ' you don't want to be here ' West TEXAS once...

If you notice , the alternator's shaft has a Std. 3MM woodruff key slot so you can use a VW / BMW / Mercedes woodruff key and any old pulley you find , Germ,an , American , japanese etc. ~ the angle is always the same on 9MM / 3/8" pulleys , it's an industry standard .

FWIW , smearing the shaft and pulley's hole with a tiny bit of grease means you won't ever have it stuck on again , ever .

The pulleys that I've found on my MB's have all been machined steel, so I'mnot sure just where those that Nate found were coming from.

The trick I'd been taught for removing the stuck pulley was to loosely thread the nut back onto the shaft, and then whack the nut with a hammer, while supporting the alternator by the pulley. The one I did most recently was done by picking the alternator up by the pulley, and having another person tap the alternator shaft nut with a hammer to jar the corrosion loose.

Post Pulleys

Pre 1981 Mercedes all had single sheave multi -piece sheet metal crappo pulleys .

All Turbo and later cars had double sheave billet steel pulleys .

Look in the parts book .

Ah, that would explain why I'd never stumbled across them, then.
