in the mid 70's MB made a 240D turbo.
but it used the 3.0L 617Turbo motor.

MB dropped the 240D from the US market in 1984, but continued the production of the entire W123 series in Europe until 1985, when the production run was officially ended by the advent of the W124 production. The 190E in 1983, the W201 chassis, was not a replacement for the W123 in any market, including the US as the 300D TurboDiesel continued to be sold in the US until 1986, when it was replaced by the W124 300E. The US market missed the bulk of the W123 variants, gas and Diesel powered.

I do not recall any European or other W123 turbocharged 4 cylinder Diesels from the factory. But that doesn't mean they didn't give it a shot. There was a formal hierarchy of models in the MB lineup back in the day and displacement and technology were the adornments of the models at the top. I am not sure a turbocharged 3.0 liter Diesel would have made it through the marketing department at MB as a 240D 3.0 Turbo instead of a 300D Turbo.

Since the parts from the turbo engine can be retrofitted into a 240d with regards to the annular oil ring pistons , oil squirters, and such.... it might be a more feasible project than some other engines with turbo chargers just added to the outside...

I am waiting until I get rich to do this and place it into a Pagoda Top 250 SL..
Just to show up at Diesel Get Together's and cause purists to hyperventilate.
