1985 240D?

I have been talking to a guy about a car. Sounds nice, and I was going to go look at it. He says it is a 240D turbo. 1985? only the 300's were turbo right?
What do I look for to tell if it is a 300, or 240?

thanks
doug

It's probably a 1985 300 D. Which should have a turbo if a US model.

No chance of it being a 1985 240 D because MB stopped making them in 1983; once they introduced the w201.

Get the vin and run it through the russian vin site. That'll tell you what the car should have under the hood.

If it's a 240 turbo, someone installed in on there. See above too.

Not entirely true. They stopped selling them in the US then but if you were elsewher on the planet you could still get them up till 85 or 86 if I recall.

But you are right about the US. If it's a US spec car it will be a 300D not a 240D.

300's are 5 cylinder, 240's are 4.

AFAIK no 240D's were turbo, although Calloway sold an add-on turbo kit to bump up the power a bit. IF it is indeed a 1985 240D turbo (chances slim to none), take some pictures, I want to see it

The 240 was still around in europe after 83. But there's no such thing as a 240 turbo.

I think you're thinking of Gurka. I'm pretty sure what he has is a Mahindra jeepoid with a turbo 616 based on the original 616 and built under license by Mahindra.

Yes, I was just referring to the engine configuration. Meaning one might be able to get those parts for their engine if they really wanted them... and have a factory stock situation with regards to fit and reliability.

Oh, another case of dumbass seller syndrome; in which the person who owns the car doesn't even know what year and model he has. This runs rampant on craigslist.

Hmm, this sort of opens up a can of worms in my opinion. I thought Calloway was the only source of 616 turbos...I wonder how easily those mahindra parts are available? Mahindra is now trying to make it into the States....Not in the market myself, but some 240D owners might be interested

Calloway was an aftermarket turbo kit.

Gurka made their own 616 by licensing the design from Mercedes, its not an actual MB 616. It uses all the turbo internal modifications (crank, pistons, cooling jets, cam, etc) so its nothing like bolt-on kits from Calloway or SST. Turboing a non-turbo MB will just crack the pistons and melt the prechambers.

I have an "85" 240D, not a turbo tho It was imported via the Netherlands.
