Poll: Have you ever heard/experienced a broken flexplate '80 300D

Has anyone ever experienced a broken flexplate? My friend has a 80 300D NA that is making a hellacious knocking sound. The motor keeps running faithfully which leads me to believe that the sound could be from a broken flexplate. What do ya'll think?

I had a flex plate go on my 300SD. It made a really pronounced clacking noise. I think you can look for cracks coming from the bolts that attach the tourqe converter to the flex plate, via the little cover at the end of the oil pan.

I was looking at the paperwork of a 300SD I took some parts off of and it had the flex disc (not flex plate) replaced at least 4 times and the one in the car was broken!

Pretty different parts. Flex disks are a pretty common failure/replacement item. Flex plate replacements require extraction of the engine and separation from the transmission.

For survey purposes - I have a nice clack too and suspected the flex plate but it shows no signs of cracking. I do know that there was a thread on here a while back showing pictures of a broken flex plate. It looked pretty gruesome.

My 300SD had a cracked flex plate, took a while to figure it out because even though I thought the problem was from that general area, every time I looked, I could not see a problem. Finally after quite a while, and a refusal to drive it, I just happened to put it on ramps and shut it off in just the right place to see the cracks in the plate. It drove me nuts for a long time because it ran well, but something was wrong. Anyway, on the way to diagnosing the problem, I took care of a few other little things.....that was cool! Bob

Mine broke on the 300SD I used to drive.
It sounded like a growling noise at first which I thought was the alternator bearings (OK so I am deaf ) when it went it just STOPPED the engine as it jammed up inside the bell housing.
