Regarding Hood Star - 300D

Hi,
Someone stole the hood star emblem off the hood of my 83 300D.
I looked on Ebay, and saw a few with the nice Mercedes logo going around the base, and some without. One site warned me of buying cheap imitations from China....Is there any advice you could give regarding What to look for and What not to look for?...and a couple said it "should fit all models", do I need one specific to my model and year? I LOVE my little (big) car and want to replace it with a nice one...
Thanks
lindajane

You might consider contacting your local Mercedes dealer. I recently found they had the best price around and there's certainly nothing to worry about regarding 'genuineness'.

Convert your next one to a peace sign, that might make them leave it alone!

They're like $20 at the dealer.

I got one last year from my local Mercedes dealer for my '82 240D. Cost $38. Made in Turkey. Hopefully better than the Chinese one I got for a friend several years ago that faded, peeled, then crumbled!

Happy Motoring, Mark

The one I bought 2 years ago from Phil is holding up nicely. It was MB branded in MB packaging.

Agreed that a genuine star part from Phil or the dealership is your best bet, both for quality and for fit. I'd be *shocked* if a "one star fits all" really existed.

There is a difference

I tried to put one on a W124 that I got from your car, oh I mean the pick and pull and it will not fit on the W123.

I'll add, I pretty much work on anything mechanical on cars and I got a great star from a great member here but....I am not brave enough to try and install it. Is it easier with the grill removed?? Thanks

I've done two, and I left the grilles on both times. It probably would be easier with the grille on a work bench.

The 123 star onto a 123 wasn't too bad. I put a 116 star (free) on my 114, and that was a little more struggling with the needle nose pliers. It leans back instead of standing straight up, but it beats no star at all.

These are dead simple to install, grill in place. Open hood, large jaw plyers, grab the mount assembly near the end, and pull down and twist 90 degrees. Tuck those flaps in close to the assembly and it comes out of the grill.
The new one is probably "loaded" and ready to insert. Drop the new one in the hole, grab and twist the thingy the other way and it snap locks into place. If it take more than 1 minute each way, you're doing it wrong.

Post What Scott Said !

Although it makes a BIG difference with direction you twist it in...

As you're in Los Angeles , may I suggest going by ETY Auto Parts in Eagle Rock on Colorado Blvd. ? .

Ask for Allen , he'll do you right .

I foolishly bought one of the cheapo Chinese ones , they corrode after about one year .

He has OEM ones too .

Performance Parts sells a nifty removable one .

The pre-facelift W124 (86-93) will have compatible hood stars with the W123. The post-facelift W124 (94-95) will NOT have compatible hood star with the W123. The post-face lift stars are also the ones with the blue/white wreath going around the base (same with the W140 and W202 I think).

The W123 hood star originally came with a 123 part number, but was superseded by the 124 or 201 part numbered stars. These stars are compatible with W123, W126, W124 (pre face lift) and W201.

W116, W115/W114 and older stars are not compatible. W202, W140 and post-facelift W124 stars are not compatible with the W123.

So if you visit the yard, make sure you first know how to rebuild the star. Do NOT lose the small peg at the bottom, and rebuilding stars is a huge pain to do (not to mention, on your hands). If you get stars from the yard, you will have to rebuild them.

When my original star was vandalized, they left the base intact (broken neck). So I got the new star and removed the remnants of the original star (base) and combined the base and the star body, to create an original looking star. The original 123 star has a wider base than the superseded version (if you're that picky, like me ).

The way to determine if the star is original, is to match the width of the base to the width of the emblem in front of the grille (below the star, facing forward). The width of the original design is wider than the superseding version, and is the same width as the one of the emblem in front of the grille. If its narrower, it's not original.

I second the advice to visit ETY Parts in Eagle Rock.

Back in the late 80's it was very common to have the star taken. When I went to the dealier he gladly replaced the start and it wasn't that expensive. He told me that there was a 5 and 10 club in the South Bend, In area-- these were people that replaced the star 5 to 10 times. Thank goodness it only happened once to me!

all the best
