How in the world do you go 40 miles 25 minutes. That calculates to 107mph. We all know you're not averaging 107mph on your trip.

up there in the mileage per day group too

I drive about 140 miles a day - about 35K miles a year. All but a mile or so on each end is highway at 70-75mph. so it is an hour door to door. I'm watching / considering what vehicle to choose next and want something that is in the 40 mpg range - but safe on the highway. A good ride is important too for my back and the rough pavement on I-40. I'm probably a year out on actually buying something, but the VW's are certainly in the hunt. Maybe a few year old E class diesel.

Not really, where do you get 107mph?

going 40mph my commute would take 1 hour, going 80 it would take 30 minutes, going 85-95 (with occasional 100+) it takes 25 mins or less.

If I went 107mph it would take under 20 minutes....since 120mph would be 15 mins...

I guess I did my math wrong. Now I am coming up with 95mph to go 40 miles in 25 minutes. Oops.

There's a EGR campaign fix you should look into for this car. They coke up.
If it's mostly highway, you've better off but if she's a slow poke driver around city they coke up. The fix is to cycle the EGR differently to burn more off / less build up.

I'll look into it. This car is probably going to see mostly highway miles, so hopefully it won't be too much of an issue.

Yes do look into it. It can get to the point where buildup gronks the turbo.
I had a VW, my brother has a Beetle TDI, mother has two Golf TDI.

vwvortex.com is a good forum board for vw if you haven't found it already.

Hey! I actually make a line of products started specifically for VW cars, works like a charm in your 04 tdi, check out www.autowindow.com

I've cleaned a couple intakes from the earlier engines. One was so clogged up you couldn't fit a pencil through the hole, it was bad!

Welcome to TDI ownership Andrew. With all their quirks and issues, they fun and great cars to drive and own.

I am sure you researched this, for your PD make sure you only use 505.01 spec 5w40 motor oil. Don't use the 5w30 version, a major TDI guru has found this motor oil too thin. I prefer Pentosin High Performance II. Although not VW approved, if your car is past the warranty period another route is to use Mobil 1 TDT 5w40. Some folks are having good oil analysis reports with it.

Cam wear is a major concern with the BEW engine code. It would probably be worth it to open up the cam cover and inspect the cam and followers. If there is obvious wear and your car is not under warranty, then an aftermarket performance cam (around 15 more hp) from Colt Cams would be my logical choice along with TDIclub.com member Franko06's bearing modification. Factory cams are much more expensive then this aftermarket cam.

Good luck and enjoy TDI ownership. I certainly have!

I used to own a 03 non wagon version and I loved it. It's the car that got me really interested in the MBZ as I wanted to tinker with alternative fuel, but not on a can that I spent 15k+ for. The fuel economy is incredible and I second the oil weight recommendation above.

YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE IT!

My wife and i have a 2005 Passat TDI that is just fun to drive. It has auto and plenty of zip. I have never been disapointed in anything with the car.

Most of the trips are short miles but every once and a while i get it out on the road and let er run! Smooth and very very good fuel economy-- highest that i remember has been around 38 mpg. I still like my 2006 E320 CDI best -- but this is a VERY close second.

All the best

Our 02 wagon was our first diesel and like most of you TDI owners I paid top dollar for it and am glad we got it. We average 25-30k on 4 diesel vehicles with the Jetta getting 20+k itself. No long commutes for us just a lot of driving in a state where you drive 10 miles to travel 5!
It gets the great mpgs, is really a practical hauler as well as a good highway cruiser.
Admittedly it has a more compact cabin compared to the commodious 123
but with its modern amenities that all function and it's more than adequate power it is a great all round car.
We have had some mechanical issues that have led to some down time at the shop [if you don't DIY get a good indy} but that's why we have more than 1 car and the Benz is always ready to roll.
Enjoy your VW

So far we like it. Though my wife won't let me drive it. We haven't even gone through a full tank yet. We had over 300 miles before we hit the 3/4 of tank mark. I'm guessing the second half of the tank will go quickly though.
