What does the depreciation curve look like for MB Diesels?
Is there a general rule as far as these cars go?
After 5 years, would it be worth 50% of MSRP? What about 10 years? I am sure at some point it levels out. I need to start saving for my next diesel.

Well you could search the classifieds and KBB prices for 2004-2005 E Class diesels. 50% sounds reasonable to me, maybe a little bit less.
W210 diesels go for $5-$10K depending on mileage and condition. So that's much less...20% tops.

It would depend on the model...
and whether it has had good reports for not needing repair from places like Consumer's Reports, and other's that track that sort of information...

And of course, how much rust or dents that particular car has....

Add to this the uncertain nature of where prices and things might be five years out. I am still buying good used cars at auto auctions for resale cheaper than normal for this time of the year.
Prices should have started tending seasonally upward by now. Instead they are cheaper than the Dec/Jan time frame. Might be too many used cars out there. Something has changed. |

Most of the ones we talk about in this forum have stopped depreciating due to age and any loss of value now is due to increasing mileage and wear and worsening corrosion. Keep the condition up and I think these cars may be starting to appreciate.

I think that the "depreciation curve" may follow the depression curve of some MB owners !! LOL
When something big goes wrong, your feelings take a dive, just like the cars value!! Sorry for being a Little silly!!!

I bought 2nd hand w124 in 2008 for $5500. It was $43,800 new, in 1986. OMG!!
I also bought one in 2007 for $500 with cracked head as a parts car. And bought another one in 2009 for $350 plus I gave him my 1995 Pontiac Sunfire, was in perfect running condition. I could have had another rusted one but with good #22 head last year for $1800. Meh... they're worth what you can get and it depends on condition

A Sunfire? One of my friends in college had one of those. Piece of junk doesn't even begin to describe it.
And yes, condition trumps age or mileage as far as real world value is concerned.

We purchased my wife's car in 1989 with 20K on the odo, for 20,000.00.It has been an ULTRA reliable vehicle. NOTHING that has failed, did so without a lot of warning. She has iirc, 230,000 miles now. It has been one of the most reliable platforms I've ever seen. Many of her friends have been through 2 Hondas, and spent way more on maintenence than we have. Not sure what it's worth now, but we are going to ride it out. I just did the timing chain, and will do the oil cooler lines soon. No matter the cost this thing will be a good value, no matter what work it needs. My TD at 115K seems to be as reliable, now that it's sorted out. OM617 based vehicles are forever.
