Leaky steering box... DYI fix?!

While under the car today I was able to take a better look at the leaky steering box... it's definitely wet all over and dripping fluid slowly (small puddle on the floor directly underneath).

I've seen the complex seal kits for the steering box for sale on this site, but looking at the thing it looks like it would be a BIG job to get it untangled and on a work bench... those of you that have tackled it already, how bad is this job?

For now I'm considering it not urgent assuming that these leaks are more of an annoyance rather then safety...

Thanks in advance -
James

Fixing your leak depends on exactly where the leak is. Much of the kit is for the power steering components. If your leak is on the main output shaft and there is ware on the shaft, a seal will only be a short lived fix.
I would clean the box & try and find the actual leak.

Which Car is leaking?

On the 85 300D, if it is leaking out of the Pitman shaft. After the Pitman shaft is removed; in the pic in the Manual it lookes like there is a reataing ring to be removed before getting to the Seal. After that you might be able to use a tool as below in the pics made from a Screwdriver to lever out the Seal.
(Before doing that see if you can read the maker and numbers that are on the Seal; with those you might be able to buy the seal locally.)

Diesel 911,
Did you make that screw driver like that or did it get bitten by some electricity one day & you just added to it?

On an F-150 list I subscribe to, the recommended method for removing the seal is to remove the retaining clip, start the engine and let the hydraulic pressure in the PS system force the seal out. Dunno if that would work on a W123, but I don't know why it wouldn't.
