pan plug on E300d 1999 transmission
Hello friend, is me again. I am in the process of changing the ATF, seal and filter.
I found a plug (bottom of transmission pan) Is this the proper plug to drain the oil? I tried to loose it, but was not easy, ( I did nor want to try to hard... before making sure this is the proper plug to drain the ATF) (some friends in previous forums have mentioned a plug by the converted...I do not see it) I also found a "pipe" by the left side of the engine. Is this the correct pipe to add the ATF. If so.. how much should I add...? If only I could get a dip stick for this car... I already got the filter and seal... waiting for the ATF for a 722.06 ( synthetic) thanks Pedrodiesel |

the plug on the bottom of the tranny should be the one to drain from. that being said the one on my 85 300DT was frozen so since I was in the process of replacing the filter as well and would be dropping the pan, I got a big drain pan and slowly dropped the pan, dropping one side a bit more than the other and drained that way. Your 99 was post sealed for life I believe so there should be a dipstick included in the fill tube and be red on top, either way the tube should be on the passenger side towards the windshield side of the engine bay. Good luck and don't forget to drain your torque converter while your at it and be meticulously clean, no cloth rags, no lint, put plastic down after sweeping and cleaning your garage floor etc. as these trans are notoriously sensitive to any foreign elements despite the filter element.

Thanks for your info
Hi, I just want to say Thanks to GRADYG3 for your valuable advice.
I did some research and my 1999 E300d does NOT have a torque converter drain. I wonder if there is any other way to drain the ATF from the converter...? Thanks Pedrodiesel |

The pan plug is for draining the oil before removing the pan to drain the rest. Replace the filter while you're in there.
If you have no TC drain, there is no way to drain it. You could flush new fluid through the cooling lines. I would just change the oil at shorter intervals, but only change the half that you get out of the pan. |
