How to retrofit newer outside temp gauge?

I purchased a replacement outside air temp indicator for my '87, and find that the only way I can use it is to also update the 4-pin plug in the vehicle with the newer 5-pin plug. I can't find either plug in the EPC (although doubtless it's there somewhere).

Strangely, the relevant service manual page shows the older setup as having 4 wires (which it does), but has them connected to pins 1, 2, 3, and 5. Pin 5 doesn't exit on the older gauge. Has anyone replaced their older 4-pin gauge with a newer 5-pin unit? How did you wire it?

There are lots of threads on this situation here on this forum. Use the search function and you will find them.

Pin# 4-pin plug 5-pin plug
1 Black/red to +12V Brown to ground
2 Brown to ground Gray/blue to illumination
3 Green to sensor Green to sensor
4 Gray/blue to illumination Green/yellow to speed sensor
5 Not used Black/red or black/violet to +12V

You can put the pins onto the terminals without the plastic plug and use tape to insulate. I might have a spare 5-pin plug I can let you have.

After searching fruitlessly for 20 minutes, I gave up and posted. I knew I'd seen threads on this in the past, but couldn't track them down. Sometimes I just don't think of the right keywords...

Sure, if you have an extra plug, that would be wonderful. I'd even send you a self-addressed padded envelope. Could you PM me with your address?

Thanks!

The speed sensor wire that Jermy mentions is a junction block just above the steering column behind the IP.
