A/C Compressor Check/Rebuild

I have an A/C Compressor that came with the engine I took from a '81 300SD that I had. It was already disconnected from the lines when I bought the car. I have no idea if it works, but since they're $250 new, I can't really throw it away. Is there anyway to check if it might still work? Is it worth it to keep it? Does anyone do rebuilds of these? Does anyone want it?

I want you to keep it long enough to figure out if it is good.
It is possible to bench test them as far as I remember...
this would involve mounting it and an electric motor to run it long enough for a test I believe...
If you are interested in putting in some work ( to save cash ) to possibly be able to use it... if it is good, I will find that test procedure and post it...

You betcha, time I got, cash I don't. I've got a table grinding wheel, will that do as far as an electric motor goes?

I have the one still on my 83 with no belt as I purchased it so I plan on pulling it and changing the oil. A bench test procedure would be great. I have an electric motor with pulley and guages. Thanks for any information you furnish us. Thanks

I could try mounting a pulley, I don't know what kind of luck I'll have. What gauges do I need?

A/C manifold guages. Either buy some good used ones, borrow, or spend about $85 for good ones.

I was referring to the grinder.... can you remove the safety stuff around the grinding wheel so you can mount the drive pulley for testing the compressor...
otherwise I have missed a visual of what you were talking about.... perhaps you have an individual item grinding setup.. so the motor is accessible without messing with the grinding wheels...?... so you can use the pulley which drives the grinding shaft ?
What hp motor is it ? Which direction does it turn ?

I don't really know anything about it, it's my grandfathers, so it's like 40 years old. It doesn't even have an on-off switch. Just plug and go. No safety stuff or anything. Extremely basic.

I'll see if I can find a set of gauges to borrow.

If you are going to use it, make sure you replace the shaft seal while you have it out.

WHOA THERE.... have you seen the MB AC Service manual which describes the procedure and special tools required to do that ?
If it were a normal job it would be different.. but I do not think the shaft seal is a DIY operation for 99 percent of the DIY people out there.. maybe even less than that...
