Good Sam was the same way, but they don't have a limit on towing distance (used to use them when I had an RV). You also have to worry about having current registration and inspection... AAA would not tow without that.

Have you/anyone been able to get a "free" tow to your house using AAA? Lucky dogs if you have!
Depends on the LEVEL of membership .... IF my memory is correct. Must have the "premium" membership to qualify for the LONGER free tow distance.

I recently acquired AARP Roadside Assistance --- haven't used it yet, but shouild be interesting to see when I request a non running vehicle be towed. Oh, wait, am I buying yet another non running car? I hope not --- I want to DRIVE one, soon.

towed 1980 300sd over50 miles no problem

bought a 300sd from a guy in glocester point virginia. a friend and i towed it on a dolly to my home at the back bottom of suffolk va. drove it on the dolly, put it neutral and left the drive shaft alone. did about 45 -55 on the highway. stopped about half way back (chesapeake sqr to be exact) to check straps and eat. had to pull over on 58 because driver was having cramps in leg with recent knee replacement. in his pain he ran us thru a big pot hole on side of road. no damage. bumpers never dragged. didn't bounce into gear.

over all no problems to date with car. total trip 67 miles. take it slow and you should have no problems.

You where not violent enough.

The flex Disc bosses are just stuck in the flange.

Hmm... I was able to seperate it from the flange, but it seems there is pinion shaft that sticks out of the diff and into the driveshaft flange. I could not move it back far enough with the prybar to get it off so I could tie it out of the way...

So there is nothing else to loosen/take off? Just use a bigger prybar??

Yes.
If the flex Disc is separated from the differential flange, use a Bigger pry bar (or two) to pop the guide point off the differential finger.

So there's enough take up in the middle of the driveshaft that you can get the rear flex disk out without taking the exhaust off? I'd run into the same problem, but didn't want to try prying harder for fear of breaking something.

Loosen the sleeve at the DS center and they should slide together enough to get it out.

The W126 has a heat shield covering this slip joint = the exhaust and shield must come off first.

For towing I separate without loosening the splined slip joint..

You are able to seperate it without loosening anything else? I put a 4ft prybar on it and still could not separate... and at 6'3" 220lbs. I'm no little guy! I could not pry it enough to get it past the shaft on the pinion flange.

I ended up dropping the exhaust, removing the shield and removing the driveshaft altogether. Turned out to be way more involved than just simply "disconnect the driveshaft at the differential".

So I guess for the benifit for people searching in the future... on a W126, at least on mine, I had to drop everything to detach it.

whunter: in your experience, is this always the case or are you typically able to pry it enough at the diff flange to disconnect it?
