1985 300D rolls away when put into park
When my Benz is put into park, it still rolls away. Is this an easy fix? I am fairly mechanical, I just replaced my B2 piston. Any ideas?

Moved from good MB shops to DD for answer.. :)

Hmm. All i can think is the linkage adjustment. Does it roll only backwards by any chance? Then it could be still in reverse. You probably thought of this. I'm assuming it starts right up when it park so it is not thinking it is in reverse?

There is a pawl (#15) on an interlock (#10) with a spring (#20) inside the rear transmission case.
It seems the pawl is not engaging the interlock. Good luck. |
I agree with the above fixes and suggestions.
Iam wondering if the parking brake is being applied? It is a wonderful tool to use . I see it all the time, people park their automatic vehicle, slam it into park and jump out, then see the vehicle rocking back and fourth. puts an awful strain on the Pawl in the transmission. Put the strain on the parking brake, then select Park. Charlie |
My wagon started doing this after I replaced the transmission mount. I had new bushing already in from earlier last year and park always worked well. I think with a brand new mount, the linkage is a little off and needs to be adjusted.
If I push forward on the shifter. it locks into park, but won't stay there.I'm not looking forward to working in the tunnel again, so this is on the back burner at the moment. Parking brake still does its job. |
My 85 300D does something like this.
When I put the car into park and if I let off of the brake the car will slide and then I can feel the parking paw grab the car to a halt. I've been using my e-brake when I park my car instead of just relying on the transmission. It's a habit I got myself into and I don't remember how or why I did. |

It feels like a much "tighter" car now, not as "loose" as before. |
I grew up in rural SD... it gets cold there.
we got in the habit of NEVER using the parking brake. because it had a nasty tendency to melt snow and such from the road, and freeze in position. and the brake would not release. I know it's silly, but this year, many many many unsuspecting southerners had their cars unable to move, for this very reason. it was on the news, and I had myself a good laugh! |

shifter bushings... had the same issue with the same symptoms
|
my SD just started doing this about a week ago. when i put it in park i can hear the pawl clicking as if its trying to catch but the car keeps rolling forward (or back) so i have been using the parking brake. how hard is it to replace the worn metal parts in the trans?
|
I'd change the plastic shifter bushings first.
pretty simple to do if you have a floor jack and jack stands, or car ramps. as far as fixing a pawl issue with the transmission, a junkyard replacement comes to mind... |
