driver's seat replacement

I would like to replace the driver's seat in my 87 300d, as I have worn a hole in the mb-tex cover on the side of the seatback nearest the driver's door. (I'm sure I'm not alone here).
I've been keeping my eyes open for a replacement seat at local junkyards, ebay, and other establishments, but I haven't found one that's been acceptable.
However, I HAVE noticed that the passenger seats are generally in much better shape than their corresponding driver's seat. Therefore, my question is: Has anyone replaced their driver's seat with a passenger seat of like model? My front seats appear to be identical except for the armrest on the driver's side. I did feel the side of my passenger seat seatback, and it feels like there is a hole in the frame where an armrest(from a driver's seat) could be affixed.
Does this approach make sense, or am I nuts?
Thanks.

Both seats are electrically adusted, even the headrest height. My intent would be to mount a passenger seat on the driver's seat base, using the original seat motors.
By the way, they are light grey mb-tex seats, 124 chassis.
thanks.

thanks,
If I were to put my driver's seat on passenger side, I would have to remove the armrest which would leave a hole in the side of the seatback. I can get a good passenger seat from a local junkyard for about $125. I just wanted to know if I could mount this on the driver's side and attach the armrest from my current driver's seat, and then junk my current driver's seat.
thanks again.

As far as the seat motor plugs, on all 126's they are in the center of the seat (and im sure they are all this way), so dont worry about the wires reaching.

Tony

If you do the procedure, I for one, would request you post your findings to this board.

I've been thinking along the same lines.

One thing you might want to check is the electrical plug match up. I noticed the motor plugs in the seat seemed to be identical except for an alignment tab being at a different location for each.

seat spring

I have a seat spring for a 1984 300 D in good shape. I'm not sure if it fits yours but you can have it for $40 + 5 shipping

Actually, each seat is bolted to another piece of frame which the motors are attached. If you can swap the top part then you don't have to worry about the wiring. I think yours has seat memory box under the driver seat.

After you got the seat out of the car, flip the seat upside down. They are 6 big philips screws, you might need a impact screw driver to get them loose. not all of them are visible but you can jump the 1st electric motor(facing the seat) to position the sliding rail out of the way. for those two screws in the middle there is a hole on each rail and you need to position it on top of the screw to get to it.

I got 87 420SEL seats in my 83 300SD(no seat memory). driver side has memory box and the connectors are different. that's why I swapped them. I think they can be done. I'm not sure about the armrest...

If you
have manual seats the recline wheel will be on the outside instead of the inside, but that's
not a big deal just as long as you can reach it.
Wait a minute there TxBill. Does this mean that every time I curse the idiot Mercedes engineer that put the adjustment wheel between the seat and the door, where it's extremely difficult to reach, that in actuality the PO had changed the seats? I'd be very happy to know that the adjustment wheel should be on the inside of the seats. It's something I never even considered checking on another car. I've always been amazed that on an otherwise very well designed car, the adjustment should be so difficult.

seat swap?

Maybe it's because I'm cheap (but not easy)but can't the springs in these seats be repaired? My mustang seat had a bad sag so I removed the upholstery and padding and welded the frame ,put the spring back and it worked. The only special tool needed are Hog ring pliers.Has anyone recovered their MB seats? Is the seat cover held on with hog rings?
