Brake Shims
Anyone know where to find front brake shims for a 84 300D? Every place ive tried that carries them is out of stock.
New pads, rotors, clean calipers and hardware, and they are still squealing like a pig. I think shims are gonna be the only way to cure it. |

Have you tried the anti-squel spray that autoparts stores carry? I have always have very good luck with it. And what kind of pads did you get? I used a set of cheapy dura somethings and they squealed no matter what. |

As far as I know, The shims are like, Part of the pad on the W123...
Ive got a few different make pads here, even the early 'thin' pre '80 pads have a thick sorta plastic/rubber layer on the back... --Not seen separate shims on any W123 Ive ever had....

Have you called Phil (sponsor of this site)? He was the only source of rear brake shims that I could find.

I believe he was having issues with his Front Brakes squealing...
Yes, The rears do have shims,--at least some of the ones Ive seen do. I've been thinking, that it maybe the pads themselves causing the noise. Maybe worth changing them for some Textar or Pagid ones. Ive found these to be pretty good...

I'm also interested in finding some front shims. I replaced my front pads about 20,000 miles ago with MB pads onto which I applied MB anti-squeal paste. Right away they squealed constantly, so I put some more paste on them. That took care of it until about 3,000 miles ago, and now they squeal when I brake at low speeds. Guess I'll be putting yet more paste on, but shims would be helpful too I imagine.
Is anti-squeal paste the kind of thing that you need to reapply after so many miles? |

If the fronts are squealing, you can use shims, part #000 421 01 96.

I've never seen shims come with new pads. I've used anti-squeal paste with no issues on my rigs. Make sure when you put in new pads that you settle the brakes. You're supposed to drive at about 30mph and lightly press the brake pedal, for a mile or two, this allows the pad to form to the rotor and reduces squealing.

Shims don't come with pads, not even the rears. I understand you reuse the ones you have.

Yea, its the front brakes. I used some Textars from **********. The old ones were half used up and were squealing. Put on the new ones along with new rotors, cleaned and lubed up all the caliper hardware and slapped pad lube all over the back of the pad....the squealing returned about the 5th time i stepped on the brake.
The old ones had some pretty good grooves where the piston was wearing on the back of the pad, so im pretty sure this is where the noise is coming from. Contacted Phil, as well as Dieselgiant and ********...plus a few other sites and all are out of stock on the shims with no idea when they will have more. The noise is making me crazy.... |

The easy fix. A thin brass strip between the bottom of the pad and the caliper. Long enough to allow for a bend over at each end so it cant slip out. This always works on the rear to stop squeal. Should work on the front as well. try it, let me know.
