Curious about P/S return lines...

Just replaced the power steering hose (high pressure side) on my 300SDL. During the removal/reinstall I observed that the return line from the steering box doesn't run straight back to the P/S reservoir but rather it takes a curious dive under the car body and runs from the driver's side towards the passenger side just under the radiator then it loops right back the way it came and into the top of the reservoir....

Why the extra length in the return line - I'm sure the German engineers had a good reason for it... I'm just curious what the purpose might be....

The loop of metal line at the front of the car is the power steering cooler
