Catastrophic coolant loss
W123 300D Turbodiesel; 215,000 miles.
Suddenly, driving in the rain last night, I noticed that the coolant temp was in the plus-125 degree red zone, and there was a mass of steam coming from under the hood. I parked about 2 miles from home and walked; fortunately it was in the parking lot of a local gas station and repair shop. This morning I took photo's and went on EPCNet to determine what part I needed. It appears the hose (p/n A123 832 84 94) on my car has a "coolant flush/fill connection" in the middle of it. That's what blew up. I cannot find a name, picture or description for this part from any of the normal parts sources. Opinion? If I simply replace the hose or find something to join the two sections together, will I be good to go? Thanks.

Get some copper tubing of the right OD to fit the ID of the hose, and youll be OK. Get heavy wall tubing, should be OK for 20 psi at 200F, but no guarantees.
I would change the hose ASAP though. Phil can get them. Make sure to keep the coolant level correct.

I also would find a copper piece to fit. It will work to get the car home, and then you can decide if you want get the proper piece coming or just replace the whole hose. Looks like the original piece was plastic. Which tends to get brittle with age. I'd just replace the whole hose and forget about the other piece.

replace the hose unless you are in a bind.
1/2 ID threaded pipe fits perfectly.. use galvanized temporarily |

I found one of those flush ports on an old pickup I just bought.
Got rid of it immediately.

1/2 inch barbed galvanized fitting from HD or Lowe's or Ace or True Value should work just fine. A barbed plastic irrigation fitting would also probably work.

1/2 " barb is too small I forget what size fit.. but it wasn't as tight as 1/2" ID steel pipe.
the plastic ones will not last more than a few trips, I promise. |

Those flush and fill garden hose connectors have been known to take out many vehicles through failures like that. Those things should never be used.

5/8" brass double barbed fitting from Napa works great.

Thanks - the galvanized 1/2" junction is a good temporary fix - I was able to use that fix and get the car home. I have a new hose on order from Phil...
