85 300d running rough after startup.

My 1985 300d runs very rough after start up. Will run this way for about 30 seconds then smooth out. I donot have trouble getting it to start. Starts quickly on the first glow plug cycle. I adjusted the valves thinking that it may have something to do with it. All valves were tight but no change after adjustment. I also cleaned the banjo bolt thinking that may help. No change. What could this be? Thanks

Check all glow plugs with a ohm meter, a good plug should read .8 ohms.

If they all check out fine then you might want to remove them and apply 12V to each one, making sure they glow properly. Sometimes the ohm test can be misleading.

I suspect its a simple glow plug issue.

You should have seen come change if you adjusted it. Are you sure you are doing it right?

I believe I adjusted the valves correctly. 10mm intake 35mm exhaust. Followed the DIY off dieselgiant. Glow plugs are probably the answer. I got this car from my uncle and he replaced 3 glowplugs and said he could not reach the back ones. I have yet to replace the last 2. I will change them this week and see if it makes a difference. thanks guys

I've never noticed much change in idle smoothness after doing valve adjustments. What I do notice is easier starting. And if the rough idle isn't caused by the valve clearances then there wouldn't be much change.

I also would suggest checking the glow plugs. You might also look into the rack damper bolt. Do a search here about it.

Ummmm that should be 0.10 mm intake and 0.35mm exhaust....

You may be getting air in the system as well, from say a cracked hose, a faulty primer pump, leaky return lines, etc.
