Salvage value is usually ten cents on the dollar of retail book. If the car booked at 6000 salvage is 600.

Agree.

This is what I was told when I wanted to buy one of mine back.
One advantage is that the title may stay in your name and not be branded a salvage.

I can only comment on what happened to me when my 1998 Jetta TDI was hit by a truck. I had USAA insurance down in San Antonio and we went round and round for over a month on the price of the car. They ended up paying me out for the car and not asking for the title back, so I ended up selling the car to a guy in Houston. I was completely honest with him about everything. But it did teach me that everything is negotiable when it comes to insurance company’s. The best thing I can tell you is have your friend talk and talk to them. If he isn’t needing a pay out quick he can get the car back for a steal. I know after a month, they want the CAR OFF THE BOOKS ASAP.
The first offer they gave me was $800 for my car. I laughed on the phone to the lady and said I would take 5k and not a penny under. But you have to fight them even if they are your own insurance company. Insurance is a scam.

Good luck,

... the insurance company has offered 3900 for the car and wants her to pick it up from the wrecker asap.
I told her I'd go get it, to keep the insurance co happy, but to reject the 3900 offer.
try and find a low miles 95 perfect interior 300D...
not gonna happen.
they will continue to negotiate, I will have the car tonight.

OK, I have it home now.
the good side...

the bad side...

what do you all think?

I started it right up, drove it onto my trailer, popped the hood, and cleared the broken air filter assembly away, looked everything over, closed the hood, and drove it off my trailer and into it's parking spot to await the insurance company's decision.

my friend paid 10,000 for her 98 300D about 3 years ago. It had less than 100,000 miles. Maybe more like 60,000 . Don't remember. Sounds like she has geico . they don't pay good i hear.

Re, the 10% of blue book , if thats the case, i got ripped when my wife totalled my 2001 jetta tdi. The insurance company , farm bureau of tn, offerred 10,500 for car -- good fair price as it had 94,000 k and leather interior, etc. But charged 2200 for me to buy it back which seemed pretty good considering the car was fixable. It got a 7500 estimate from the body shop. It could have been fixed or totaled by the insurance company -- right at the 75% of value mark. I was too happy they totalled it to argue about the buy back price.

I hear she has diabetes and passed out. it could have been due to the time change... who knows. anyway. she passed out. and from the look of the car, she went to the left side of the road, and dropped into a steep incline. it looks like the car dropped, and landed on it's passenger headlight/hood. then flipped over touching the center door pillar on the driver's side, then popping over again to the tires.
she was not seat belted in, and the airbags did not deploy.
I looked at the car, hopped in the drivers seat and turned on the key. all lights came on, so I started it after a good glow, and it idled smooth, and seemed fine. I put it in gear, and it smoothly went into gear. the passenger front tire was touching the fender, so it kinda scraped a bit, but otherwise no issues. I may turn this into a beater and drive it myself...

I would have bought that car off you in a second but I just purchased a used engine for my 95. There are others in my situation. If you are not going to do anything with the car, you could make a quick buck and help someone out.
