Maybe I'm just a true dieselhead but
I keep having this image in my mind of the 4 stages of the Diesel 'cycle' through my head AS I DRIVE!
I certainly does not help that I love the clatter. I keep imagining the pistons going up and down, the red hot air exploding, the fumes escaping, the turbo spooling.... Man......I'm sick. |
I had a small procedure done a couple of weeks ago and I was hopped up on some crazy pain killers
Anyway when I drove back it was a crazy experience for me. I swear my foot molded into the go pedal and I became one with the car. When I tried to accelerate it was such a chore, almost like the car was telling me not to over push her. I was going 5 under the speed limit too for no particular reason other then I had no reason to go any faster. |
okyoureabeast you are so lucky!
Just think what would have happened if you were driving a PRIUS while you were at one with that car. Goodness, you would have had to 911 the State Police to get them to stop the car. Just lucky, that's all I can say

My name is Andrew and I am a dieselholic. I'm on step 2 of the 12 step program. The first step is admitting you have a problem. But I intend to stay on step 2 for the rest of my life. I'll happiy admit I'm addicted to my diesels, but have no intention of reducing my depenency on them.:D

I drove up to a local business a couple of weeks ago and the manager, an older hispanic woman, watched me park my car (83 300SD).
When I got out she asked me, "Why is it chuckling?" |
I also see Tri-Stars where ever I do.
Like on my contacy case lense and the bottem of the coffee maker in the dininghall. Mercedes Benz is everywhere! |
It is the otto cycle actually. Being able to visualise it helps if you eventually have to fix it. Some people work on cars engines somehow without even knowing how the otto cycle works. That must be very hard.
In the early days of motoring and motorcycles a long trip usually meant you were always going to get your hands dirty. To add to the mix tires where going to let go frequently. No heaters, manual windshield wiper, lousy headlights it went on and on. The majority of roads were not even paved either I imagine. Since it was state of the art at the time everyone thought it was great I suppose. From a historical perspective that senario was not that long ago. My grandmother well remembered seeing the first cars, Airplanes and the introduction of radio. Probably the widespread introduction of hydro as well. Certainly mechanical refrigeration. Even I remember in Toronto weekly deliveries of ice for the iceboxes. Steam powered road surfacing equipment. Also seeing the first diesel engines on railways being introduced. |
I love thinking about whats going on under that aluminum hood when im driving. The MB 617 is such an elegant all mechanical engine it just blows my mind how quiet and enjoyable it is to drive. Ive never owned a car without a 617 so it feels completely adequate when it comes to performance.
What I just don't get is how a high-stress mechanical machine which turns high pressure explosions into rotation energy can last 400k+. When you drive the engine it basically not wearing at all. Germans suck electrically but their mechanical and metallurgical skills are just incredible. When a drive a mb diesel I literally feel like im surrounded by the highest grades of steel ever used in a car. Just look at how well the safety cages hold up |

Actually, Germans were good with electricity until things went from "electric" to "electronic". |
Unless you ditch every gas burner licensed to run on the streets, you're not diesel.
Everything street legal I own is diesel. I was diesel before diesel was cool. |
I will keep the AC/Heat/Radio off so that I can hear my engine.

Tin ear
Love listening to the improvement in the engine as I tweak, frett and fuss. Amazing how one can discern the smallest difference. The more she runs the smoother she gets. Wouldn't that be great if everything else in the world did that

I'm not happy unless there is a touch of blackness under at least two of my fingernails.
heh, my high school cruiser was a 81 Caprice wagon with the crappy OLDS 5.7 Diesel. :-P must have changed the head gasket 5 times on that car... and bolts, and ... finally it got rear ended by a drunk hit and runner... never drove right after that, and I just parked it. glad to get back into diesel with MB! I've been off the wagon for 5 years now, and have no intention of getting on! DIESEL FOREVER! |
