Vacuum pump noise?

Started down the road and heard a new/strange noise. Went right back home and heard what sounds like a ball bearing banging around in a metal can. The past few months I heard a pecular sound when shutting off the engine. Could this be the vacuum pump(?) or somthing else, powre steering, water pump? If it is the vacuum pump I may have gotten lucky not destroying the engine.
I will not start the car again until I know for sure! '82 240D 313,00 miles

thanks, bernie

Bernie,

I think you dodged a fatal bullet (for your engine.) Seriously DO NOT start it until you are certain it's fixed. PM sent.
