SLS pump rebuild????
So, I decided to finally fix my leaking SLS system on my 84 300td today. I started by repairing the high pressure line by reusing the old fittings on some new 3/8 hydraulic hose (gates) which was fairly easy and strait forward (Thanks to the great write up in the peachparts DIY section).
I Also ordered a Suspension Pump rebuild kit from autohauz which came with all the new o-rings and a new gasket. I thought it was straight forward, but I think I may have done something wrong because now when I start her up I can't not manually raise the back by lifting the SLS valve lever, which I could easily do yesterday. I tried to drive her around for a few miles to bleed the air out but I didn't want to go to far and make tings worse. I hope I have not screwed anything up and I was hoping someone might have a few type to pin point the problem. Thanks in advance, |

What sort of directions came with the kit ?
I think you will need to bleed it differently....much like a brake line... I do not remember seeing a rebuild for that pump in my paper FSM's ..but it could be there... have you checked the archives for threads about this..you may not be the first to attempt a rebuild ...

System is said to be self-bleeding. Are you getting pressure in the main high pressure line? Is fluid circulating back into the reservoir?

That small plastic bag kit is not for the internals. It is just the rear seal and the gasket to the block. The large o-rings I have no idea what they do, the inside ones are much smaller in diameter.
ALSO, be sure to use the MB SLS oil. Apparently most other oils can and will break down the rest of the seals. Not what you want.

Thanks for the fast replies. Does anyone have a DIY write-up or instructions on the rebuild, just to make sure that I did it correct way. I will check tomorrow morning to see if there is fluid circulating to the reservoir. If not I may take the pump off again and see if the o-ring isn't sitting right or the seal may have broke. Also I forgot the mention that the kit came with two large o-rings one the thinner one fit perfect where the two parts pump come apart , but I wasn't sure where the thinker o-ring went.
Thanks again for the help |

There are o-rings that go even deeper within the pump What was wrong with your pump to begin with?

I was leaking a significant amount of hydraulic oil after trips longer than 20 miles. But now I wish I hadn't messed with the pump and just kept adding oil, because I am now nervous my rear will begin to sag if I don't fix that pump soon.

Pump Working Again!!!
So for some reason I decided to check to see if the pump was working yet and to my surprise when I lifted the lever on the valve the rear came up!! I am guessing there was just a whole bunch of air in the system after taking the pump off and after a few days of driving around the air finally purged it self out.
Now that I know the system is working I will invest the money in some new accumulators, which will hopefully take away that stiff ride feeling. Does anyone have suggestions on where I can get those accumulators, The cheapest I could find was Autohauz for $103 a piece. Thanks again for all the help |
