1982 300DT Wagon Ignition Tumbler

Sorry if this has been covered somewhere, but I can't seem to locate a similar issue. Most deal with the key being stuck in the ignition. My issue is when I put the key in and turn the ignition nothing happens. The ignition tumbler doesn't seem to have the clicks that it normally would not to mention the car simply does nothing when the key is turned. If the door is open and the key is inserted there is a buzzer sound, but that is it.

Would a lock and tumbler replacement take care of this issue, or could it be something else? Thank you!

Sounds like there's a good chance that a new tumbler and key would fix this problem. I haven't heard of this "issue" yet either, usually its like you said, things get stuck or don't "turn".

Assuming your tumbler is the original unit, and your car has 150K+ miles, its time for a new ignition tumbler anyways. They're less than $200 installed by a good MB mechanic, less if you do it yourself. The cost and frustration of an ignition R&R once they're broke is significantly higher.

I say replace it. That should fix it. But if not you're still ahead of the game if the ignition tumbler is original.

Does the key turn to the start position against the spring part? or just goes so far and stops?

My just need to replace the tumbler. dealer item, usually takes a day or so, will need proof of ownership/registration, Vin# to provide the parts guy.

I replaced the 85 a couple times, but at 357k I just ordered the whole assembly from Phill. $172. turns smooth as silk now.

The 240 I just picked up, it wouldn`t turn at all, w/o a bunch of wiggling it. I replaced a good tumbler and key to see if it would work. no go, so replaced that assembly also with a good used one I had.

have you read this thread that was up and running a month or two back.

Thanks for the information! I did not see that thread, but it is just what I am after.

It goes all the way to the start position, or the 3rd notch on the ring. I tried to insert a paper clip and remove the tumbler without success last night. I didn't have good lighting so I am not sure if I got it in the right spot. Is the idea to put the clip in the hole and press on something to allow for the collar to unscrew?

Thanks again! Also, updated signature!

Great info guys, thanks! I was able to get the tumbler out. I read somewhere that I could use a screwdriver and insert it into the ignition (minus the tumbler) and get it to start. Being this is a new car to me, that I purchased in non-running condition, I am dying to give it a crank. I put the screwdriver in and turn clockwise. Got the familiar sound of the buzzer, but no lights on the the dash (glow plug, battery, etc...). Does anyone know if a screwdriver should work to turn her over?

I filmed a video with my ipod, but I'm afraid the only thing it shows is that I am very bad a filming things

The screwdriver should work. at least it did on my 240 when I was having the same troubles.
Looking down in the tumbler hole, push the little knob looking thing to the right. push the screw driver to the left side of it and down. It should turn and start the engine.

This worked for me a couple times until I got nervous and decided to not push my luck too far. didn`t want to get stranded from the house. finally replaced the whole assembly.
