Limited Slip on W126SD??

Hi everyone..I asked this question in the club but I should really post it here..

With all the snow we have had in the Northeast and especially in the DC area, I was wondering if any one had converted their sd to limited slip or if it is even possible without sacrificing much mpg. I know these are not the best cars in the snow but wish I had some type of slip control. Your thoughts??

Some gas W126 models and possibly W123 models came with 2.47 limited slips that'd fit the diesel. T Walgumuth swapped out the guts of a W201 LSD into his 3.69, do a search.

You'll do just as well by getting a set of real good snow tires + some weight in the trunk. Limited slip is not necessary if you have good tires.

My w126 came from the factory with LSD; no reason why you couldn't find a rear axle at a junkyard that's got it.

Yeah... but I'd still like to have an LSD.

How can you determine the ratio of the differential?
Does it have an info plate on the differential?

It is stamped on the lower left of the diff when looking at it from the rear of the car. It will say "2.24, 2.47, 2.65, 2.88, 3.07..." etc....

I did quite a bit of research on it before doing mine...I did it for autocrossing...

I started with a 335 diff from the 190 16valve. The internals are exactly the same on that diff and the 123 diff so they can be swapped into the 123 housing within certain gear ratio ranges. I wanted the 369 gear ratio for autocrossing and that required a spacer behind the ring gear. I had that made and bought new longer bolts to hold it to the spider.

I also bought new clutches for the diff.

My favorite machinist swapped out all the guts and set it up.

I have my old autocross car for sale including this 369 limited slip diff but for the right price I would pull it out and sell the diff by itself.

The thing to remember when looking for a used limited slip is that the clutches are likely going to be shot and it will need to be rebuilt in order to function properly.

I bought a used 2.47 unit from an 87 560SEL. I am close to installing it in my 87 SDL -- also bought new axles to do at the same time.

The 247 would have been from a 380 or 500 gasser. Limited slip diff should not impact fuel economy at all.

ok, so i have found what looks to be a euro 560 sel in a yard - i can verify the rear ratio by looking for the stamp. but more importantly - how do i distinguish the LSD diff from the open carrier unit without tearing the cover off, are there any markings or VIN designations ???
