Short coolant hose just south of thermostat housing

on a 1984 300DT, there is a short (2" - 3") coolant hose just south of the thermostat housing. how does one remove and replace this hose?

You need to remove the thermostat housing from the side of the head.

You have to remove the lower radiator hose and the t-stat housing. I used a 41 mm internal diameter section of hose bought from O'Reilly.

I see two 13 mm bolts going into the thermostat housing. the bolts
are right next to the EGR valve pipe. are these the bolts that come
out to remove the t-stat housing? thanks!

Are you guys sure the rest of that stuff has to come off to replace it?
No chance of just cutting it off...
and bending the replacement to slide it on ?

Good luck doing that one. You will soon see why...there is not huge gap between the housing and the connector on the block.

Also the replacement section of hose is not very flexible, or thin.

It isn't...in fact I don't think its even possible. Much easier just to loosen the thermostat mounting bolts. I did it the reverse way, putting it on the water pump housing and wiggling it in there just right with the tstat still mounted...it did take a while to get right though. Phil only sells the hose in 3 foot sections--I would offer to cut a piece off and send at the price of shipping but the remaining hose is at my folks' house so no can do ...I'm sure someone has excess if you ask around here.

When I did mine under the Hose was corroded and had some deep pits. I after I scraped down to clean metal I used JB Weld to fill in the pits; after it hardened I filed it back to shape.

Some have had the Bolts shear off when removing stuff from the Cooling System.

sounds like it might be best to use PB blaster or some other lubricant
to loosen the bolts before removing them. the joys of a 26 year old
car.

I don't think pb blaster will be able to get into the threads of the bolts... it will help, because it will loosen the gunk that is holding the shaft of the bolts, but be exceedingly careful with those bolts. I'd tap on them gently with a small hammer prior to trying to loosen them. I SAID GENTLY! and a SMALL hammer! also, when you get them out, clean them well, and coat them with black silicone, or better yet, blue permatex before you reinstall.

Happened to me....be careful!! Had two snap off in the old water pump housing, luckily I had an extra. Replace them all and be sure to use a bit of corrosion inhibitor/antisieze on them.
