Pulled the instrument cluster- a couple ??
I pulled the cluster because a light bulb burnt out and the odometer hasn't worked for about 4 years. I had a couple of questions to the guys who have done this before. First, I need the odometer gears. I need the small drive gear (E1?) (about the size of a pencil eraser), the gear that is driven by it (E2?) (bigger than a dime), and I would like to replace the tan colored gear that sits on top of the gear that actually turns the odometer and trip meter (does that one make sense, I can's find it anywhere, but it is deteriorating as well. The first two gears are missing teeth so they definitely have to be replaced.
Is there a website that sells these for less than $40 for the first two gears and where can I get that tan colored gear? Is there a reasonably priced kit somewhere for all five gears in the speedo? Also, has anybody found LED's for the instrument panel? If so, where did you find them and what were the part #'s if applicable? Is there anything else that I should do while I have the cluster out? My sig should come up but this is an '82 300SD Thanks |
Jeff at odometergears.com has everything you need. Beware, they are not cheap. But, they will fix the odo problem. Been there, fixed that.

Probably a good idea to check/clean/tighten the ground connection while you're in there. Check operation of the potentiometer and replace/jump if it's bad.

ground wire is brown, and connected to the speedo back through the metal tabs...
some here install a wire under one of those screws, and get additional grounds this way. *(the bolt behind the cluster with all the brown wires on it is a perfect place to get additional ground point for your wire) the potentiometer is the ceramic device that you twist to adjust the brightness of the instrument lights. search for the DIY on repair of it. or just solder a wire across the terminals on the back of it for full brightness and forget the POT. |
The whole cluster out of another SD from PNP is about $37. pull one with your Differential ratio and adjust the milage to correspond to yours. Just a thought. also will have a potentiometer if you need one.
http://www.picknpull.com/ to find one close to you. they also have a list of their inventory and the row it is in. Charlie |
Thanks again for the responses! The dimmer switch (potentiometer) works fine. I now recognize the ground wire you were talking about and I will try to add the additional ground point to it. I will keep the PNP in mind but I would rather fix most things if I can. But you are right it sounds like the whole cluster would about the same price as the new gears,
