Where should the oil on the dipstick show? 300D

On a new oil change. Where should the oil on the dipstick show after running the engine for a few minutes to get the filter full? I know this sounds stupid but I want to get it right.

Scott

It should look like it is low on oil. Like about an 1/8th of an inch above the lower end of the mark on the dipstick.

You should wait 30 minutes and try to do an oil reading again. It should read full if you put in whatever amount was specified on your owners manual.

For an oil change the W123 82-85 300D (with a 617.952 turbo motor) takes exactly 6.5 quarts to fill it to halfway on the dipstick. Thats how I do it...no need to guess and check over and over.

My owner's manual for my 85 says to put in 7.9 quarts.

I'm guessing for every model it is slightly different. For me I've just been putting in 2 gallons even since I hate having that tenth of a quart left over.

I have a leak at the turbo return line which I've been suffering with ever since I got the car working. Hence why I fill it up at 2 gallons. By the time I am ready to do a change at 5,000 miles the oil reads at a little bit above the low oil line.

its funny that this post came up. i have the same issue about the turbo leak. i checked mine today and its just past the first indent on the dipstick by a 1/4 inch.

i'm looking at the book and non-turbos are 6.0 quarts and turbos are 7.9, however the bottom of the chart in my Haynes manual says this in italics.

**Note: Capacity is approximate; actual fluid level should be measured as described in the appropriate Section.

In Section 15 (Oil Change) the directions say:

...add enough oil to bring the level to the upper mark on the dipstick.

Interpretation?

All Data says 8 liters, or 8.5 quarts for an 84 300d turbo with a 617.952 turbo motor

That's not correct, it's 7.9 quarts. However, you need to use the dipstick; you don't want to overfill and you never really get all the old oil out. Mine usually takes closer to 7.5 quarts.

There are several different versions of dipsticks. The final version for the 300D had a brown handle. The upper mark was moved up slightly from previous versions. Even with the updated dipstick, 8 quarts with a filter change will have the level above the upper mark. Generally 7.5 quarts is about right.
