Can someone please take a look at this post http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGQn78HANwU
It looks to be identical to my engine but if you look at mine it this one, I am missing the hose coming from the top of the air cleaner and going to the top of the air pump. I have the hole in the bracket and it looks like there is a spot to connect a hose to it too. This might be another reason I have little vaccuum???

that hose does not draw vacuum, it sends the air that is drawn from the vacuum system back into the motor at the air cleaner. modern vacuum pumps do this internally. interesting that your motor has the lid with the hole, but not the pump with the hose... more evidence that it's been changed.

Engine may be newer than 1980 as it seems to have the smaller pencil glow plugs. I think the transition to them was in 1981. It may be a euro block if all 5 cylinder mercedes diesel car engines sold after 1980 in north america where turbo.

Keep checking for the lack of power my 77 300d is not too bad powerwise. Pay real attention that with someone stepping on the accelerator pedal that the linkage at the pump is moving the arm to the injection pump stop.

Barry, MB did not typically make changes exactly at the year mark.... the vin numbers will usually be quoted ... or the month made.... as to changes in these types of installations..

My car was built in 10/79. The # on the engine is 617 016 040 that's what I could make out. As for the hose I was questioning....there is what looks like a port at the top of the air pump where a hose would attach?

awesome thanks...no clue why i couldn't do it. Any way to decipher the replacement engine in it. 617 016 040. I even called Benz today and they have no listings of that. He said call again on Monday with the rest of the numbers after it and he'll try to call Germany for me.

You needed to add the WDB.

I had the same problem with my 80 240D, VIN # 123 123 10 163926
came back I needed 17 characters not 14. so added WDB and all was well.

do you have the original wheels?
yours are listed as aluminum disc... as in the aluminum wheels with the hubcaps? or the normal bundts.

Mine are the regular rims...not hubcaps. It also has leather listed. I always thought that the Mercedes leather was really a vinyl/leather combo? If it is leather, the interior is pristine!! might have helped that he used to have the gaudy sheepskin covers on the seats the entire time he owned it!

The 617.011 engine is a N/A Euro truck (Transporter) engine. While I do not know the specifics the engine has the same 88 HP as the .912 suffix engine.
It is a mid '80's engine starting in 1981 (MY 1982) and running past the production of the .912 in the TN line of trucks. The TN trucks were replaced by the T1 in 1990 which used the V6 diesel. These were produced up until 1996 when the TN1 Sprinter was introduced.
I don't think the 617.911 engine was produced past 1989.

The front of my 1982 300SD engine has 617.016 03 01, so there is a turbo on this one. It also looks like an 82 stamped on the to the left of the engine number. I am unsure of what was done to the car previously.

I have a similar situation, a 1980 300TD with a turbo motor in it. I have been wondering what the turbo motor came from. I am guessing that the po changed the short block and used the original head since it has the provision for the sls pump on the head being a wagon.... Searching the head number might not help as it could be the one that came with the car swapped onto a different short block. I am going to find some numbers too, been curious for awhile. I think I am missing an engine shock bracket. Anyone know location and number of engine shocks for the n/a engine and turbo engine? Are they in the same place for each engine option? Or is there a certain bracket for each engine mount?
