Most cars around that price would be great around town for a while, but if you started to put serious miles on them, you will end up replacing most of the old drivetrain rubber, axles, flex discs, bearings and so on.

I bought my 83 300D for a couple grand, and drove the piss out of it. Over the course of 3 years and hundreds of miles a week, I put almost 5 grand into it just on repair with me doing all the work!
ALL that cost was in the first year as I brought it back up to a car that COULD do hundreds of miles a week without a problem. Just the breaks of owning a 25 year old car. The next two years were gravy, since by then it was basically a new drivetrain.

With 1500 dollars and a taste for an old car, I would start with a metro, an escort, or a civic for 500 bucks, and put a thousand into making it reliable with yard parts, and only new for the most important stuff.
.........thank you very much........

A 1500-2000 car can easily run you $7000........

Right now the stable is as follows. 1970 unimog 406 with a om352 diesel, 2001 ranger rover hse, 1995 land rover discovery, 1992 range rover classic. Anyone who knows land rovers know how "relaible" they are so maintenance and repairs are not an issue.
I dont mind fixing something old. I'd rather work on somethign that was built and sold as it needed to be, rather then reengineered to be as cheap and profitable as can be. I cannot drive a normal car, or else I'd buy a civic. I hate front wheel drive. I love the idea of a small performance compact, but nothing new turns my crank. maybe an old mini cooper or a late 80s firefly turbo.

My thought on the diesel benz was it's better on gas, at 1000-1500 if I get 2 years out of it great. They look great and if I go on a date it looks better then a kia. I agree with their marketing department, "smart is in" but I dont think kia is smart.

I ran my '99 LR to about 95,000miles, other than a couple of oil leaks (go figure), never had a problem.

I'd be happy to trade my '87 300TD for your 406 though, ... save you some mileage. A DOKA? Torque-converter? My perfect combination.

haha no she is not for sale, yet. bought it with a rebuilt engine but the shop forgot to tighten #2 injector, fuilled the crankcase with diesel and spun a bearing. nobody is taking the blame so I'm stuck pulling it apart. got the oil pan loose, just need to jack the car up so the front diff is out of the way, what a big job. Everything is huge on this beast. Not a doka and not a torque converter, though if you wanted a rustfree cab 416 with a torque converter i know a guy. he can even get you a rust ridden doka cabin o a 416 body, you connect

HA, then you'll have no issues with a benz. if ya like the 123, there are planty for sub1500. how big are you? the 123's are a tad on the tight side. 126 or even a 124 has a bit more leg and side to side room.
I doubt you'll have issues with them now that you've explained your tendencies to us.

Just a hunch - but I don't think 1000- 1500 will buy much in the way of a turnkey, dependable Mercedes-Benz. Not one to cover over 25000 miles a year anyway - without a lot more needing to be sunk into it in parts/repairs.

I think I'm still interested, ...

I got hooked a few years back. I met a guy at a coach rally, who towed a 406 DOKA behind his coach, it was the tug from the Salsburg airport and had the "heavy-duty towing package" with a torque-converter. Awesome setup! Showed me pictures of it with all of its weights and towing a 747. I've been looking for the "right" 'Mog ever since.

10grand cash and you can tow it away from here. it's nice, someone sandblasted the bottom and repainted it. taking some stuff off to get the oil pan and it's almost a pleasure to work on

I can't recommend a 240D to anybody looking for a commuter car unless commuting is done at 35 mph. On the interstates around here, my 240D needs to come with MB-branded earmuffs in the glove box because to run a steady 70-72, you're just darn near flat-out in the thing. It's got a few mph left to give but it's already screaming.

300SDL is my car of choice for routine long trips. Engine provides better mileage than either of my 61x engines in spite of its extra cylinder and higher horsepower, and the second generation long w126 is the only one that's big enough for me to sit comfortably in for extended periods of time. (6'4")

Can't be that loud. The Unimog does not even have insulation. Any. I had ear plugs on and it was still loud, the big 5.6 rumbling away for 6 hours on or near the governor

I'm going to have to disagree there. A 240D flat out is way quieter than my Ninja at highway speed, and also considerably quieter than the International and Oshkosh trucks I used to do convoy missions in.

I once drove mine from Carson City, NV to Locust Grove, GA and back. There were times when the lack of power was annoying (like the entire westward traverse of Wyoming, uphill and into the wind), but noise was never an issue.
