If you've given your air filter housing a good shake and it holds firm, your bracket and mounts are okay. If not, remove and fix.

The washer being referred to might be an air cleaner mount sleeve (617 094 02 20). It helps to deflect heat and oil hoping to keep the rubber mounts from deteriorating too fast (see pic below). Also, use the upgraded breather hose (valve cover to air filter housing). Check and replace all your O-rings at the various fittings as you go along (get yourself a metric o-ring kit (cheap) from Harbor Freight/Northern Tools or their equivalent. Chances are most of your o-rings are brittle.

After removing the air cleaner, check the two big o-rings at each end of the air cleaner to turbo "U" hose (hard plastic air intake). Chances are they are hard and brittle, as well. The turbo air intake to air filter housing (603 098 03 65) and the air intake to turbo (617 098 03 65).

There is a rudimentary blow-by test. Have you done it? Loosen oil cap while engine is running so it's just sitting there. Accelerate engine at throttle linkage. If the cap just dances around, you're good. If the cap is thrown upwards to a significant degree, you probably have serious blow-by. Try You Tube. I think there is a blow-by test there. Others here can probably provide the exact link there or elsewhere.

Do you have the newer (flatter) air breather tube that goes from the valve cover to the air filter housing? It generally leaks less than the older two-part hoses.

I don't know, do I?

No, you have the older style. I'll find the part number so, the next time you need to replace you'll have it. Looking at it though, it looks fine (no visible oil leaks).

What about your cigar hose? Check for cracking. Are the injector return lines dry (not soaked with fuel)?

Take the battery tray off and rust treat. You'll probably have rust under it to treat, as well.

Do you have the fuse box cover (not shown in the picture)?

Check the belts for cracking and aging.

Sorry if I am repeating what others have said.

Yeah. I was changing fuses in the middle of taking photos.

And don't worry about repeating what other say. It either re-enforces what I should be looking for or makes me research deeper if people contradict one another.

X2 on the fuse box cover. Leaving it off will cause trouble with bad connections.

Is that rust on the body behind the air cleaner? If the drains for the cabin air inlet are blocked that can happen.

Did the car use much oil in the drive home?

I test for blowby after a drive of at least 20 miles by taking the filler cap off, If the fumes come out like a steam train, you have an issue, otherwise dont worry about it, you dont have a new car, can expect some blowby. My old 800k mile car was so bad that if you tried to loosen the cap when the car was idling it would be blown off in your hand !

Can you please pot a pic of the drivers side of the motor so we can see the fuel system.

Once you have emptied the tank, cleaned the strainer and treated the fuel, it may take a couple of tanks before you will see if you have fixed the problem you had.

If you still have the secondary fuel filter you replaced, its worth cutting it open & having a look at what is in it. post a pic of some of the filter paper for comment.

If the belts are not new, best replace them. You can keep the old ones as emergency spares.

Good Luck.

I really enjoyed your thread when you were getting your "new" car home, and I also like running threads about a persons car. It is still OK to make a separate thread when a specific problem occurs.
And you have certainly proved that you utilize the search function, when we always like!
Also, dadette123 and Biodiesel300TD {Rocky and Andrew} are very reliable "wagon guys" and know their stuff.
Enjoying your new ownership. Keep it coming.....

Thanks! I think my current one is good but now I know what to get when it goes out.

I'll be picking up some Biobor this weekend when I go into the city. And hopefully I can find some Diesel Purge as well.

Is this something I need to worry about? It looks like some frayed wire is wound around the fan. You can get a closer view by clicking here and zooming in with the magnifying glass near the top right.

it looks like the second belt grenaded, I'd get that wire out of there, and replace the belts as a MATCHED pair.

That wire needs to be pulled, its probably a stray but if its still attached it will need to be replaced.

On the fuse box cover... any easy ways to get it back on ?

I just jiggled it back and forth until it fit. It's a pain to get off and on.
