86 300td auto box into 83 240d?

Is this possible? Are they the same transmission? The 83 240d is a 10 hour drive from here and only does 25mph when it sees a hill. Otherwise, it runs fine. I have a known to be good auto from an 86 300td wagon, just wondering if it would be a straight swap?
Or is there a quick fix for the 240d trans. issue.

Not easily done

Mercedes switched the starter from the right side to the left in 86. So that is the stopper for most of us - the transmission just won't mount up to the engine. Some are switching the automatic 240D's to 4 speed manual, and even that is a big job, but it can be done.

The mountains in Ontario are really not much. Is your transmission down shifting as it should?

So what's the story behind this "1986"? Because if it's really a 1985 or before it'll work just fine.

no.
the transmission is geared differently and is controlled differently. computers and such.
I'd like to hear more about the 86TD as well. if it's a 124 it'll be interesting.

I had the year wrong, it's an 82, so it should bolt up OK.

I haven't had a chance to road test the car yet, I'm heading down tomorrow to do that. I'm taking along the tranny from the 82 300td just in case it's more than something out of adjustment.

I do have a 4speed and the pedals, etc. I'll probably stick with the auto box for now.
