1985 "sweet spot"?
I happened to be reading an old thread on peoples' preferences for the w123-w126 era turbodiesels and one poster mentioned that the '85 OM617 has a "sweet spot".
I know my '85 300d has electronic EGR and a different cam (and is connected to a different final drive ratio) but this is the first I've seen a reference to a sweet spot. Can someone elaborate?

Essentially that point where the car runs smooth as silk...its in the right spot for maximum drive-ability, gets great mileage, and its able to accelerate without waiting for the turbo to spool up.
IMHO thats about 65-80 mph. Mines an 83 but has an '85 2.88 rear differential, but its more about rpms than actual speed. With the 3.07 gears that shifts downward about 5 mph.

85's got better seatbelts, and carry over the better gear ratios and stall speed from 84.

Not all '85s have the active-restraint seat belts. Mine for instance, does not. And it's not that mine were swapped out or something. It doesn't have the wiring or control box below the ashtray for them...
But Puff's sweet spot is around 80. Feels so nice at that speed.

Belts
Hmmm I was wondering what a previous poster meant about the belts.
Mine doesn't have active belts either... the only difference between them and my '80 is that the '85 belts are a tad shorter, from what I can tell.

Hmm I thought that the pretensioned belts were standard for 85. Every 85 I had seen has them, they say RS on the buckle.

Yep. Not all have them.
And you can't just swap 'em in. You have to have the control unit. I kind of prefer not to have them. I can only imagine how much they cost to replace. And since this was first gen technology, probably not worth the trouble. I could be wrong. If it's one thing Mercedes almost always gets right, it's safety.
