windshield gasket
A friend & I used uro gaskets on my 80 300sd some dish soap & a 1/4" nylon rope in the channel of the new gasket started at the bottom & worked our way around very carefully it is a 2 or 3 person job! When taking out the chrome strips out of the old gasket be very careful not to bend them taking them out or it will affect how it goes back together. My friend is a former body & paint guy & he really liked the uro gaskets. take your time don't get in a rush & you can do it! Ed.............

I did my 240's seal last summer. I used a Uro brand seal with no sealant. Hasn't leaked a drop. I cut the trim out of the old seal. Cut down down both side of the trim and gently work it out. Don't bend it you'll never get it straight again. Once everything is out. Clean the track out well. Clean up any rust you find. Install the seal onto the glass. Then install the trim. Soapy water is a must. spray down the track on the car and the track in the seal with the soapy water and install the rope with the overlapping ends at the bottom. Set the window in place and have a help push on the outside while you pull the road put. Make sure it seals well as you go. I removed the A-pillar trim to give myself a little more working room.

Was the A-Pillar trim brittle? I am having a hard time with some of my plastic trims.... They have a tendency to break... I have the car in the garage with the heater at 70F (need to do some poor15 work). Did you have to remove the upper ceiling trim (with visor)? Thanks for the post, I never done a seal before, I wonder what else I am going to mess up in this project.... Live and learn I guess..

Who stocks the windshield-gasket, for W123 and whats the cost...?
--Also, do you think they would send to UK? Fastlane catalogue is down at the moment, so cant check if they do it... They seem unavailable--except at Stealers here in UK (Just like everything!)

The A-pillar trim it held in with metal clips. They shouldn't break. But they do sometimes take a fair amount of prying to get them off.

Do yourself a favor and use an OEM Mercedes seal. Others "might" work but they don't come close to the real deal. I used a non-OEM seal last time and never will again.
With MBCA discount it was $113 at dealership.

OEM Only
My glass guy said NEVER use anything but an OEM gasket and butyl sealer. He wouldn't even consider anything else. This guy does cars that would morethan pay off many of your mortgages. That was the first thing out of his mouth when I wanted to replace it...Is it an OEM gasket? If not, he didn'twant to do the job. I think the OEM was about 130.00 total with our outrageous CA sales tax approaching 10%!!?? at the dealer. It only has to be done once in a lifetime, bust for the extra cost.

My Uro front seal is not holding up to well, and it's only been a matter of months. Next time I'm going OEM.

A year ago, I replaced the cracked windshield in my newly acqured '82 240D. The work was done at a local glass shop so that there would be no chance of my cracking/paying for extra glass. Having read complaints about aftermarket gaskets on these forums, I decided on the OE Mercedes gasket, so the shop couldn't blame any subsequent problems on an inferior aftermarket gasket. So far no leaks.
Happy Motoring, Mark
