Pulled 2 617's last night

I cant thank this forum and its members enough ! Thanks for answering some of the dumb questions I had and the PM's for engines and parts .

I finally found a donor ! Trashed interior , aluminum filled auto transmission , every electrical switch you could imagine bypassed ! But an engine that sounds like a Singer sewing machine !!!

After weeks of living on this forum I used all the tips and tricks I found and removed both in less than 8 hours. Pressure washing before removal is essential !! ( I tried it both ways ) At midnight with my wife running the crane we pulled the donor engine had a quick class on how it works and cleaned up.

Amazing how these cars come apart as complete systems !!

Now as I look at my rusting 240D sitting next to the empty shell of the 300 I'm contemplating a 616 manual 4 in the 300 . Ease of working on the 240 with styling of the 126 chassis. Surely automotive purgatory as far as speed !!

Possibly just delirium from sleep deprivation !!!!

THANKS TO ALL !!!!!!

A 616 with a manual in the W126 would not be much slower than in the W123 chassis....the W126 is only a few hundred lbs heavier, and is actually more aerodynamic....so at higher speeds it'd be about the same.

Whoa, a 4-cylinder diesel W126. That would be dangerously slow.

This was the donor car . I wound up giving 600.00 for it.

http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/cto/1671148828.html

It looks good but up close its in pretty sad shape. The engine was changed out or so it seems the numbers don't match (found at the rear top left side of the block ).
I found all gaskets on external parts new and silicone was coming out from under them. Only bad part I found on the engine was the turbo impeller. Kind of chewed up. The original engine it will replace has a new turbo so I will swap it out before installing the engine. It starts with glow or without first crank so I guess the turbo came from a prior engine. Still doing the C.S.I. investigation.

All the power accessories work including the AC. According to stickers The AC was just rebuilt in 09' and converted to 134 it got nice and cold before we removed the engine .
Radiator is brand new but top plastic nipple was broken off and replaced with a tire air stem JB welded in place !! (amazing repairs are possible when you haven't a clue or care for what your doing)
All switches are bypassed locks are broken but with the dark red color and shiny chrome it keeps calling me to make a project out of it !! The 616 is about as worn out as the body on the 240. Maybe wait on another 617 and add the 4 spd.

First and foremost the wife's car needs to be finished........ or I will be !!

The W123 is not much lighter than the W126.....I bet it'd be about the same. But it'd be one of the only 240SD's out there!

MB factory produced trucks and limos with the 616 engine, so I am sure it is capable of "moving" a W126.
