w123 Homelink/Compass/Auto Dim Mirror in the Works. Any Interest?

yup, the mirror is in progress. basically it's a w123 stalk drill for wiring, attached to an auto dimming gentex mirror body which also has compass and optional homelink (i have bodies with and without homelink). instruction manuals with detailed wiring will be included with each mirror.

this isn't a for sale thread yet since my friend and I are still working on the first model, but we're pretty confident we can get it to work. if anyone wants to see a sample pic i can post up a pic one we made for a w124/w201.

sure, i'll dig up a pic and post it very soon. if you or anyone else has some basic wiring skills this would literally be a 30-45 minute job

here's some off a w124. the w123 stalk was made of a harder aluminum than the w124, so it's significantly harder to drill it for wiring harness, but it can be done. you don't see it in these pics but the wiring harness that you need to splice into your car's existing dome light harness comes out behind the spring loaded bar that keeps the stalk attached to the metal bracket attached to the body.

we haven't figured out a price yet. i still want to get the prototype in hand and post up some pics. i think the final price will depend on how many people commit to order one.

I'd be very interested if the price is right.

we're still working out pricing. the w123 mirror stalk isn't realy easy to drill like the 201/124 which were made of a softer aluminum. otherwise it's the same procedure as doing the above mirror.

now as for wiring, i know that the first and second gen w123 had different front dome lights. the second gen was basically the one it inherited from the w201 when that came out. i think retrofitting this mirror to the first gen should be doable so long as there is a switched 12v. it's been accomplished easily on an early 190e so we know the second gen w123'ers will be able to benefit from this

My rear view is pretty shot. I'm going to replace it soon and your upgrade sounds like just the ticket.

Any chance we could get the time and a stock ticker in there?

wow, yeah that would be a great idea on the time and stock ticker. perhaps I could put a 3g connection on there, or at least a bluetooth adapter and the droid operating system so that you can sync all your droid apps directly onto the mirror when you drive. and a microphone so you can talk through it as well. LOL

I'd love one for my SDL too. I believe the W126 and W124 have the same mirror mounting.

They have the same mirror mounting, the difference is the length of the stalk. THe w126 stalk is too long to drill through, so if you wanted one you'd have to use the w124 stalk. If you're not too short in height, it shouldn't be a problem to see with the shorter mirror.

Having the mirror higher up would be better for me actually. LMK what the price is.

guys, the asking price for the w201/124 mirror was $165 shipped, but the w123 mirror is harder to drill, requires more labor, so it will be $180 shipped. the reason this isn't a full blown group buy is that these exact mirror bodies aren't really easy to come by--I get them in stock by the ones and twos. so i don't want to make promises i can't keep.

if the price is too expensive, or if buyers don't want all the features like compass and homelink, we can also do a more basic mirror with just the auto dimming feature for a lower price. on that one, since the mirror bodies are more readily available, we can do a group buy on them.
