they aren't too bad, if i may say so myself. you can't beat the concept of innovating on top of the stock stuff without really harming the car in a way that can't be undone

Great idea Sev! I'm getting spoiled by the ADM in my Camry. I thought it was going to be just another useless option, but I love having it.

I cheated, used the OE 124 auto-dimming mirror. Using the E38 mirror works too, have one of those (OE/Prototype), the 22mm ball makes for a better wiring coinduit.

The OE harness is also available to add this, not sure of the number anymore as I installed my last one, but it's out there (a plug-in DIO).

it's a little known fact that Mercedes did offer an auto dimming mirror for the w124 and w201 chassis. it was a very very rare option. the oe harness is available to install the oe mirror, but won't work on the mirrors i'm offering in this thread

Never the 201, it was already being replaced by the 202 when we designed the 124 mirror, ditto with the 126, already replaced by the 140. To some degree, the 124, W202, R129, and W140 were designed simultaneously in 1991/1992.

i have no clue what you're saying here, but it is a well known, documented and provable fact, that auto dimming mirrors were available for both the w201 and w124, as a mercedes factory orderable option

Yeah, I designed them, didn't do one for the 201 because it was slated to leave production before the mirror would be introduced and thus we were designing for the 202 at the time. True that the 201 uses the same mirror, just wasn't designed for the 201.

Really? I guess you can look for a part number if you have an EPC membership, perhaps you can prove me wrong. I won't be offended. I know that I was never asked to design a W201 application because the platform was being replaced at the time and the W202 was well into develpment. It is always possible that MBUSA made the parts available to the W201 application anyway, the wiring will probably work on the late-'87 on up car but not on the earlier W201 (without the tilt/slide roof), that would require a substantially different wiring harness.

The first Mercedes EC (ElectroChromic) auto-dimming mirror began development in '91, for the 124, I believe that start of production was mid-'92, and the last year of the 201 was already in production. Those mirrors lack the outside electrochromic mirror output/drivers, and the reverse-override feature (clears the mirror when in reverse), first mirror with those IIRC was the R129. I do have a set of modified R129 OEC mirrors that were intended for the 124, never installed them, I believe that both sides are aspheric (prototype) where the factory driver-side would have been flat.

The E-38 mirror makes an excellent mirror for the 124, I used them for early Audi prototypes / applications also, and the W202 mirror works great with a modified W124 stalk (22mm ball grafted on). Most domestic mirrors are too wide. It's far easier IMO for most people to simply buy a BMW mirror button, glue it on the glass, and install the BMW mirror and they're common at the junkyards, then cover the header area with something. Your system is a bit more of a time-consuming creation, but in the end a far cleaner installation using the factory header mounting location.

Also, there's a photo in the headliner replacement thread of the correct mounting plate for the auto-dimming mirror, the wires are fed through a cast-in hole in the plate rather than through the spring area in the center. We tried the latter, didn't work well, so we modified the mounting plate with the new hole. Unfortunately these late plates (standard on the '94/'95 124s IIRC) are heavier as they are cast from zink zn-al-si4 IIRC instead of the earlier aluminum-alloy ones, ditto with the mounts (aka: Speigelfuss or "mirror foot").

I have also seen postings from someone here who adapted a 140 mirror to a 124, although I'm not sure why one would want the size of that thing unless it were the memory-power version, ... and still I'm not sure why.

So a bump to this old thread. I have a (factory) Gentex mirror in the Jetta and Passat and really like them. I also had one in my Audi, which I got at the boneyard for cheap.

I got one installed in the MB yesterday. I used a mirror from a 95 STS. No compass.

I took apart the MB mirror. I don't know of a way to take these apart without breaking them as the front retaining piece is glued in all the way around. I removed the ball socket from the MB mirror and trimmed it so it would fit in the back of the Gentex housing - the MB mirror stalk has a ball on the end, the Gentex mirror has a ball that bolts to the back.

I glued the MB attachment to the Gentex mirror with some JBWeld:

The Gentex mirror retainer is clipped onto the "body" of the mirror and wasn't too hard to remove with a plastic pry tool. While I had it apart I changed the green LED out with an amber one I stole from an extra MB dash switch.

The MB mirror ball screws on to the end of the stalk. The original bolt hole on the Gentex housing gives access to tighten it down:

I ran thin wires under the rubber on the MB mirror stalk up to the dome light where key switched power is available. Overall I think the install came out nice, and the total cost was ~$20. A great improvement of the stock manual mirror, which wasn't working totally right anyway.

The Gentex mirror is slightly narrower than the original MB one, but it's not a big issue.

PS: Have you ever wondered what that yellow goo that ozzes out around older MB mirrors is? It's the glue from masking tape used inside the mirror. If it were possible to take the mirror apart I'd recommend doing so and removing the tape so your mirror doesn't get covered in goo, but like I said earlier I can't see a way to get the mirror apart without damaging it.
