Disconnect the brown line at the back of the shut off valve and see if it starts and stays running. Have you had problems turning your key when you start your car?

I just read through the dieselgiant glow plug tutorial and it is quite good, I will follow that through when I get my hands on a multimeter.

Burnzy I can't remember any key related problems. What is the brown line about? I'll try that after I am through with the glowplugs if things are still not OK.

The brown line is the vacuum line that runs to the shut off switch FROM the tumbler assembly(key) sometimes....not often the "ignition" tumbler does not release the vacuum to the shut off switch on the IP which would cause a no start. Like I said, a bit of a long shot but I have run across a few long shots on my journey.

Exclamation update

Hi all,

Just wanted to update you on my no start troubles. I checked all glowplugs and found 3 of them to be bad. I replaced 2 of them (# 5 is tough to get to and so I didn't replace that yet) I also checked the relay and with the exception of # 5 GP the whole system tests out fine. That said, still no improvement to the no start condition. I have always been able to start it either with lots of manual priming or lots of cranking (hooked up to a 50amp starter AND another running diesel) but I'm afraid of burning out the starter and want to force a start as few times as possible before actually solving the problem. The strange thing is that once it's running it runs beautifully. Also it starts up fine if it's been running within the last hour or two. A mechanic friend suspects the injection pump but another says no on the grounds that it runs great when it's running. Could it be the lift pump? I have an extra I am going to try. Also I just dropped it at a garage for a compression test. If that is OK and my piston rings seem intact then I guess the next step is fuel delivery timing adjustment relative to the piston movement? Still confused but trying my best - and can't afford a new injection pump or a rebuild, Ryan

have you removed the lines from the IP and verified fuel is pumping?
