should i buy this wagon

should i but this wagon
ive been looking at this 81 wagon,he wants 1000$,originally asked 2450-,paint is cheap peeling over silver origianl color, body no rust except one spot inside-suspension in back questionable, hydraulic hoses are weeping in engine compartment-not sure at sls pump or if it even works -he says it does, vacum system is not complete(according to him some kids has cut out some lines ??)needs to have vacume applied to shutoff valve manually-will need vacume put together again-not to bad.engine sounds good, had moderate blowby, trans shifts ok,feels underpowered but could be the ususal stuff, dash cracked, blower works, but feels like constant heat vents work ,window switches except one work, headliner of,back hatch doesnt stay open,ok brakes ,interior good but dirty ,has 3rd seat.seller is a mechanic but doesnt work on diesels,he got it by giving a customer 1k for it to help her out with her mortgage?? what do you think-he will not go lower

Are you sure it's an 81? The wagon is supposed to have the turbo for '81. The "trunk badge of truth" does not say Turbo Diesel. Also, it appears that the A/C system is the servo controlled one.

I also see damamged/missing rear lenses, and clear fogs on the front.

Not bad for $1000 though.

rosenfe 04-05-2010 03:14 PM

your right he advertised it as a 83 ,but not turbo and has evil servo, must be 80,but there is another one im going to look at it is an 81 with turbo, good paint body, sls -he saysfor 1500,again odometer is not working has 220k,some headliner tears-i dont have pics for that one.

rrgrassi 04-05-2010 03:19 PM

Odometer is can be an easy fix. Do you have access to all the records? The 220K could be 280K easily. If you have the records from prior maint/repairs (when odo was still rolling and assuming no slippage before it stopped), you could extrapolate approximate mileage based on prior miles and time between services.

he has no records, ive decided to pass on this wagon, its too rough,it will need a lot to get it nice, plus its slow without turbo

rrgrassi 04-05-2010 03:31 PM

Probably a good idea...

Carpenterman 04-05-2010 03:49 PM

Agreed on passing it up. There are too many niggling body and trim defects that will take a long time to sort out.

Now watch him sell it on e*** for $2000 .

JB3 04-05-2010 05:13 PM

with no rust, it will easily sell for 2 grand. Someone in the rust belt will swoop down and grab it.

with missing trim I dont think so...also its not a "california" car
just saw a 124 diesel wagon with unadvertised rust go for over
2k in ocala

saw it and poked holes in body...no pictures showed it and they are clearly there, the winning bidder cant be happy

yeah, but all the rusted out cars have lots of trim! for 1000 bucks, that was a good deal if it ran at all, and was a good body. I agree with skid row joe, I would have bought it, then bustled off to the yard and picked up all the trim I needed and starting tinkering.
A running driving wagon on ebay without rust would not be unreasonable to fetch up near 2 grand if I were the seller I think. Also, the seller could make it look way better pretty fast by getting all the broken lenz and trim pieces.

Absolutely!

And "$1,000" was only the asking price.

It would have been in my driveway/garage now for over 10 hours, after negotiating it down down a bit......

rosenfe 04-05-2010 08:04 PM

this is a california car ,and now your making me rethink it again, though there is another one 81 ,stronger ,no cheap paint job, good sls,i may be able to get it under 1500.i thought wagon prices were high by looking at ebay, but now i see that the economy has hurt the market, people are just not buying, not much spare cash for many.

Codifex Maximus 04-06-2010 01:26 PM

I believe strelnik is/was looking for a wagon as well.

That wagon didn't look too bad except for the sat on hood and the cave in on the tailgate. Trim is easy.

The fact that it wasn't a turbo would have been a showstopper for a keeper for me. A quick dressup and resale would have been feasible though.

okyoureabeast 04-06-2010 01:34 PM

Does this car have the evil servo?
