Chain tensioner & IP removal
Afternoon,
I am finally where I can take the IP pump out. But, I'm worried about the chain tensioner. Is it necessary to take that off. Some reference material says take it off, but they say you have to use pressure to get oil back in it, and it sounds like I could go wrong there. It took me several hours to get the bolt off on the passenger side at the rear of the IP. I just want to get it off, put the new o ring on, and put it back. I've done everything else but the chain tensioner. Will that give me problems if I leave it alone? Thanks. Hugh Sr 1984 190d (W201/601) |

I didn't. Not sure why you'd need to.

The only reason I can think of is that with tension on the chain it will pull the IP timing gear inward, putting lateral force on the IP. It may be harder to remove and install because the timing gear may not be centered.
I think I loosened up the tensioner when I removed the pump. It made sense to me.
