Great Fuel Economy

I wanted to share some good news

Just finished a 250 mile jaunt from South Bend, In to Cleveland OH in my 2006 E320 CDI and the computer inidicated that I got 38.3 mpg. Had the cruise set at 73 mph, AC on (Kinda warm in Indiana/Ohio today) and 4 of us in the car. Wonderful ride!

Sounds like a keeper. I guess the stories of CDIs with two on board, no A/C just making 40mpg, and a touch over, are true.

I want one of those, (an '06 CDI) and am actively shopping for one.

My lowly '99 E300TD gets just 32 mpg at that speed.

I've gotten my dad's to 40mpg before keeping it to 70 or under with the AC off. I've found that the computer is consistently about 2mpg pessimistic on average MPG based on the fill up and calculate method, so you actually might have been getting closer to 40. I took a 650 mile trip in it in March and got 35mpg with lots of stops and gos and quick acceleration. An E350 would probably struggle to get 20mpg in that situation!

It's really amazing that these cars can have the power they have and return MPG numbers that our old diesels could only dream of.

And as a side note...I think the numbers listed on the EPA site are completely bogus (23/33). I don't think I've ever seen it get below 27mpg with completely city driving.

Now, if they were to couple that excellent economy of a CDI diesel with a system that ran the engine at a specific optimum rpm for charging batteries, we'd have a good platform for an electric solution. Throw in regenerative braking and I'll bet the economy climbs into the 50+ mpg range.

What I don't understand is why they are making hybrids with GAS engines? It just kills the economy of a hybrid.

My theory is that they don't want to stomp on their own existing lines.

You could probably get those numbers if you punctured a hole in the bottom of the fuel tank

On a side note I have been averaging 21,22 as of late, it probably doesn't help that my injector return lines are weeping though. When do fuel stations switch to summer diesel? It's been really warm lately here in central New York.

Saving peanuts

It is futile to talk about fuel economy unless you have $25K to spend. Say you own a 84 300D which gives you 25mpg. If you do 15K miles per year and a CDI can give you 40mpg. You save 225 gallons of diesel or about $700 at current prices. You need 35+ years to recoup your capital imvestment. That is why hybrid never make sense, you save peanuts per month on fuel.

New cars give you more comfort and safety features, so if you have the money then go for it.

The Germans already did. WWII U boat power was exactly that. They didn't have common rail but they pioneered unit injectors. BUT add all the extra metal and you gain a lot of weight.
