Replacing 124 dash, have glovebox/airbag question

Current project is an '87 300TD. The dash was cracked, replacing with a '93 dash. The '93 dash had a passenger airbag.

I've already tossed the '87 dash.

When I remove the airbag, and the brackets, there's nothing holding the upper and lower halves together at the glovebox opening. In the original '87/glovebox dash, there was a cast ring around the opening where the glovebox door bolted etc. The airbag dash has none.

Does anyone know what the '93 glovebox version had? Is it a similar cast ring that I should have removed from my '87 dash or is it part of the stamped metal airbag bracket? The cast ring was foamed into the '87 dash and didn't look salvagable in any easy way, I'm hoping that there is a different way to mount the glovebox door etc.?

Someone who has removed a later glovebox and remembers how the opening was constructed, or has two to compare?
