Kicking the tires, anyone know how this here thing works? Or my new 87 300d.
Car has ~250k and has sat more or less for 2 years after po wife died. Burns no oil, shows no smoke. Po said never used oil. I asked specifically about overheating. Radiator has a pinhole he says (never saw anything). Trans leaks about 1 q every 2 weeks.
Drove my new 87 300D back from Raleigh to Atlanta without issue (I may have maxed out my CC at JR's cigars). Car needs work and I got a list of questions. 1. Front end wallows, shocks? 2. Rear end sways a bit much, bushing kit? 3. Go pedal has no go but good torque, this thing need an Alda cleaning? Did 80 most of the way back and it held but for all but a couple hills, clearly I expect more. 0-40mph approached infinity. Gonna change filter as well. How do I see if the go pedal is making the ip max out (does it have the same problem as the w123s? 4. Anyone have a good oe radiator they want to sell me? 5. Around cylinder 1 and 2 there is a rapping, tapping gently at my chamber door. At idle, less than gentle. Off idle it goes away. Hydraulic lifters? What should I be looking for here? 6. Water temp gauge, never came off 80. Are these fairly reliable? See question number 4. 7. Safe to pressure wash engine? 8. Transmission, clunks in ever gear and has a "upper seal" leak. Good bet its the modulator? (Will look at leak tomorrow asap). 9. Drivers seat, one side at the bottom moves, not the other. Something very solid in the middle of the seat, WTF is that? How hard is it to fix these seats. 10. The fancy LCD should show temperature correct? Time to find a FSM.

The suspension is similar, so look for the usual suspects. It has a soot filter, or trap oxidizer, don't know if they wear out, but wouldn't surprise me.
The ALDA may need adjusting too.

80 is weak, 130-135 is good.
Remove the line at the alda, blow through it, you should be able to blow through the overboost protection solenoid / switchover valve and into the intake plenum. If not, find the blockage and clean it, this is the normal issue. Also common for this line to broken off of the valve. Next try filters, air and fuel. After that, check exhaust for blockage I guess, I've read that the trap-cat can clog.

There should not be a trap oxidizer on your engine. For the rattling, get a hammer and flip it around and press down on the tensioner damper and see if it goes away. The bushings gets worn out on top.
The suspension issue is most likely one of more of the multilink rear suspension. The bushings get worn out. Next in line may be subframe mounts. Report back with your 0-60...that will give a good indication as to whether it is accelerating properly and/or getting boost.

It could totally have a trap, if the OP doesn't know what that looks like, its the football behind the turbo. I looked at an '87 last fall with 200k and an intact trap. It happened to have a totally destroyed motor but you can get bogged down in the details.

Did you change the oil before driving home? If the oil is thin those hydralic lifters make noise. I nearly bought a 603 from an '87 300D that sat baking in the sun for 3 years. I planned to put it in the 350SDL.
The lifters rattled until a fresh oil change and a short drive. It was perfect after that.

The trap-ox is original, behind the turbo. The trap-cat is the replacement, which is in the exhaust aft of the downpipe.

I wouldn't pressure wash my engine...I've just been hitting it with the citrus engine brite, a small brush and some fresh water to rinse it off. *warning* Cold water is not good for a hot injection pump (among other engine components)!!! My car runs at 85C-90C...only runs higher in stop-n-go traffic with the A/C on.

Question # 10
It MAY just need a new thermo resistor soldered onto the end of the sensor
cable. Congratulations, once you've sorted out the "Making Power" issues and suspension services,It'll spoil you for the other diesel MBs. also, you're now more easily able to take advantage of GSXR's vast experience. http://www.w124performance.com/images/

Temp Sensor (Found It!)

Registered User Join Date: Jan 2000 Location: buckhorn, ontario, Canada Posts: 101 Sensor Replacement Ron, What you get from the dealer is a sensor soldered to one end of a 2-conductor wire. This enables you to replace the sensor cable to the display connector (around the fuse box). Because of the labor involved in routing the cable through the engine wire bundle, many mechanics will just cut-off a piece and splice it to the old cable (not recommended!). Others, to avoid the splice, will desolder the sensor from the new cable and replace the old sensor. In any event, all you need is the sensor itself which is an NTC thermistor. Units such as the Fenwal #192-302LET-A01 or Thermometrics #EC95F302W are more durable and accurate than the original spec. The Thermometrics unit, for example, lists for $3.75 and is available from electronics suppliers such as Newark and Allied. Hope this helps. I'd remove the ALDA altogether. Plenty of posts here and I haven't missed mine a single day.
